Part Description
Title: The Efficacy of Averrhoa bilimbi (Kamias)
as an Alternative Rust Remover
Purpose: The researchers aim to determine
if Averrhoa bilimbi or commonly known
as kamias can be used as an organic
alternative to chemical rust remover.
Rust is the corrosion of metals due
to their exposure to both water and
oxygen or oxidation. It makes all metals
weak and damages it. A way to prevent
and remove rust is with the use of
chemical rust removers widely available
in the market, however their formulation
contains chemicals which can be harmful
to the health, environment, and animals.
With this in mind, the researchers seek to
determine if A. bilimbi can be alternative
to chemical rust removers.
Kamias has a high oxalic content
which can aid in removing rust in metals.
With it being widely available in the
Philippines, there will be no difficulty in
procuring the material. The organic rust
remover made from A. bilimbi extract will
help the community in terms of price and
availability, especially in households.
They can make their own rust remover as
well as save money from buying
commercial rust removers. This study
also benefits students and researchers
because they can replicate the study and
improve it. They may also use it as a
reference for future studies.
Introduction: The use of metal is common in
everyone’s daily lives. From furniture,
devices, jewelry, kitchen utensils,
hardware tools, and the likes. No matter
how people take care of objects made of
metal like hammer, knife or even vehicles,
rust is inevitable.
Rust is a reddish-brown flaky coat
on a metal. It happens when metal is
exposed to both oxygen and water for a
prolonged period. Basically, it is the
corrosion and oxidation of iron and its
alloys. All types of metal will rust at
differing rates, however it can be
prevented and removed with the use of
rust removers readily available in the
market. Although there are rust removers
easily available in the market, it contains
chemicals that are not good for the
environment and sometimes, even
worsens the condition of the rusted
metal.
Rust removers have a formulation
containing acids, corrosion inhibitors and
tensio-active ingredients. This formulation
is all chemically produced which can
cause harm to the environment and one’s
health. In connection to this, humans
have always been innovative and with
their endless curiosity, they found out the
properties of citrus fruits such as orange,
lemon, lime, pomelo, calamansi, and
grapefruit which can be an organic
alternative to chemical rust removers.
With this, Averrhoa bilimbi or most
commonly known as kamias can be a
potential substitute for chemical rust
removers.
In this study, the researchers will
determine if A. bilimbi extract can be an
alternative to chemical rust remover.
