BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY

Gender equality is the term of having the same rights,

status, and opportunities as others, regardless of one's gender.

(Random Horse, Unabridged dictionary 2019)

Gender equality is the goal, while gender neutrality and

gender equity are practices and ways of thinking that help in

achieving the goal. Gender parity, which is used to measure

gender balance in a given situation, can aid in achieving gender

equality but is not the goal in and of itself.

According to Pillay Navi (2012), Gender equality is more

than equal representation, it is strongly tied to women's rights,

and often requires policy changes.

According to Undp.org (2017), the global movement for gender

equality has not initiate the proposition of genders besides

women and men, or gender identification outside of the gender

binary.

According to UNICEF, gender equality "means that women and

men, and girls and boys, enjoy the same rights, resources,

opportunities and protections. It does not require that girls and

boys, or women and men, be the same, or that they be treated

exactly alike." (2017)

Introduction

INTRODUCTION

Gender equality is the equality of every gender. Gender

equality does not impose that women and men are the same, but

that they have equal value and should be accorded equal

treatment. (Cambridge Business English Dictionary 2019)

According to Fabiola Munhoz (2019), Girls and women are

discriminated against during education in terms of access,

permanence, completion, treatment, learning outcomes and career

choices, resulting in disadvantages that go beyond schooling and

the school environment. The presence of gender stereotypes in

curricular, textbooks and teaching processes; the violence they

face in and out of school; structural and ideological constraints

as well as male dominance in certain academic and professional

fields are factors that giving hindrance to girls and women from

claiming and exercising their human right to education on an

equal stands.

Another tool that applies to this struggle is the

Sustainable Development Goals Agenda (SDG), adopted by the UN

member states in 2015, which recognizes that “gender equality is

inextricably linked to the right to education” and establishes a

commitment to ensure inclusive and quality education for all,

4
General de Jesus College
Vallarta St. Poblacion, San Isidro, Nueva Ecija

and to eliminate all forms of discrimination against women and

girls by 2030.

“Gender equality is more than a goal in itself. It is a

precondition for meeting the challenge of reducing poverty,

promoting sustainable development and building good governance” –

(Kofi Annan former Secretary-General of the United Nations 2018)

CONCEPTUAL FRAMEWORK

Gender equality is achieved when women and men enjoy the

same rights and opportunities across all sectors of society,

including economic participation and decision-making and when the

different behaviors, aspirations and needs of women and men are

equally valued and given.

Sustainable development refer on stopping discrimination

toward women and serving equal opportunities for education and

employment. Gender equality has been conclusively shown to

stimulate economic growth, which is crucial for so called

developing countries.

This study aimed to focus on the perception of General de

Jesus students about the gender equality. The specific group to

be

General de Jesus College. This study aimed to identify the

different perception of Senior High School students about gender

equality.

The researchers made use of quantitative method of research

wherein the major sources of data are survey from selected

respondents using open ended questions supported by observation.

The research was done during the 1 st semester of S.y. 2019-

2020.

DEFINITION OF TERMS

Discrimination. It refers to the unjust or prejudicial

treatment of different categories of people or things, especially

on the grounds of race, age, or sex.

Equality. It means "the state of being equal." It's one of

the ideals a democratic society, and so the fight to attain

different kinds of equality, like racial equality, gender

equality, or equality of opportunity between rich and poor, is

often associated with progress toward that ideal of everyone

being truly equal.

Gender. It refers of the two sexes (male and female),

especially when considered with reference to social and cultural

differences rather than biological ones. The term is also used

more broadly to denote a range of identities that do not

correspond to established ideas of male and female.

Gender equality. It refers as sexual equality or equality of

the sexes, is the state of equal ease of access to resources and

opportunities regardless of gender, including economic

participation and decision-making; and the state of valuing

different behaviors, aspirations and needs equally, regardless of

gender

Perception. It refers in a way of regarding, understanding,

or interpreting something; a mental impression.

CHAPTER II
REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE AND STUDIES

This chapter presents a series of related works to the topic

of the perception about gender equality of Senior High School

students in General de Jesus College. The related literature are

presented in thematic format.

Academics

According to Lis Højgaard and Inge Henningsen (2013), the

significance of gender in the academic world involves the

perspectives of both equal opportunity theory and gender theory.

The equal opportunity perspective analyses gender inequalities in

higher education. There has two aims in this field of research:

first, to document gender imbalances and their development; and

secondly, to account for these imbalances.

Children and Youth

According to Mette Seidelin (2013), an independent and

cross-disciplinary field of research is the study of gender,

children and youth. There have two areas: first, considers how

cultural norms and structural frameworks reflect different

conceptions of boys and girls, in particular when it comes to

incest and the notion of ‘seductive girls’. Second, examines

13
General de Jesus College
Vallarta St. Poblacion, San Isidro, Nueva Ecija

children’s and young people’s behaviour and gender-specific

strategies within these cultural and structural frameworks.

Communication

According to Lisbet Falsig (2013), gender and communication

research addresses how sex and gender perspectives are expressed

and experienced in communicative contexts. It examines how gender

is constructed through communicative acts between people and how

it is managed in different domains, such as the media, the

educational sector and information outlets. Research is carried

out to investigate the dynamic and communicative patterns in male

or female groups, as well as focusing on hierarchical constructs

and body language in a range of settings, such as public debates.

There is a special focus on how gendered dichotomies and

stereotypes persist through discursive effects in textual,

linguistic and visual materials.

Ethnicity and Race

According to Elin Elnef (2013), the themes of race and

ethnicity constitute a new and vital field of research, which

encompasses studies of migration, minority groups, critical

whiteness studies, racism and discrimination, and adoption. With

14
General de Jesus College
Vallarta St. Poblacion, San Isidro, Nueva Ecija

a focus on gender equality, one of the central aims is to uncover

how everyday life, working lives, social relationships,

identities and affiliations are influenced by local and global

dynamics. The focal point is to uncover processes of racial and

ethnic identity in order to understand how notions of race and

ethnicity might be connected to specific bodies and positions,

thus causing power inequalities.

Health and Disease

According to Birgit Petersson (2013), female in worldwide

life expectancy is higher than male life expectancy. Higher

female life expectancy is often described as “lost healthy

lifetime”, where in women live longer, but often with

disabilities. This fact has resulted in comparisons between the

two genders in terms of both their biology and their general

living conditions. Many side effects of medication can, for

example, be attributed to the fact that no distinctions are made

between the genders with regard to dosage. Research has shown

that differences in hormone exposure are already crucial in the

foetal state. It is essential to investigate this issue further

to ensure proper health care for both genders from infancy into

old age.

15
General de Jesus College
Vallarta St. Poblacion, San Isidro, Nueva Ecija

Literature

According to Anne Scott Sørensen (2013), who is granted

access to literary institutions? What is the role of gender in

determining who is included? How are gender and sexuality, male

and female, hetero- and homosexuality, and forms which shatter

the existing patterns of these relationships portrayed in

literary texts and popular culture? Could it be claimed that

language and texts in themselves create gender and sexuality, and

if so, in what ways?

These are the kinds of questions that literary gender

research deals with, employing a broad understanding of text that

has come to include different forms of pop culture and media

products, ranging from movies and TV to blogs and Facebook.

Media

According to Vibeke Pedersen (2013), research media analyses

representations of gender and gender differences, showing how

these representations are perceived by audiences. Research is

carried out on both old and new (digital) media which are:

printed press, magazines, TV news programmes, TV series and the

new genres of the internet. The main themes of

16
General de Jesus College
Vallarta St. Poblacion, San Isidro, Nueva Ecija

this research are representations of women, representations of

female politicians and the use of female experts. Several

projects focus on youth, for example, a recent Nordic project

investigating differences in gender representation in

pornography, and gendered differences in habits of pornography

use. Other important genres being researched include Danish and

imported drama series, including Scandinavian crime series, and

genres directed specifically at a female audience, such as so-

called “chick-fiction”.

Religion

According to Else Marie Wiberg Pedersen (2013), gender

research is dealing with themes of religion explores the

relationships of the different religious systems to gender as

both a phenomenon and a category. This entails examining views on

gender roles, women, the body, sexuality, and morality and

ethics. This is focused on how gendered meanings within

particular religions, specific historical, cultural and

theological contexts.

CHAPTER III
RESEARCH METHODOLOGY

This chapter presents the research design, research locale,

sample and sampling procedures, data gathering and data

instruments.

Research Design

The quantitative research design was used in the study. In-

depth individuals interviews were conducted in General de Jesus

College in Senior high School in different strands.

Research Design is generally based on a social

constructivism perspective. Research problem become research

questions based on prior research experience. Sample sizes can be

small as one. Data collection involves survey. Interpretation is

based on data collected.

In natural and social sciences, and sometimes in the other

fields, quantitative research is the systematic empirical

investigation of observable phenomena via statistical

mathematical, or computational techniques. The objective of

quantitative research id to develop and employ mathematical

models and theories. The process of measurement is central to

19
General de Jesus College
Vallarta St. Poblacion, San Isidro, Nueva Ecija
quantitative research because it provides the fundamental

connection between

empirical observation and mathematical expression of quantitative

relationships.

Quantitative data is any data that is in numerical form

such as statistics, percentages, etc. The researchers analysed

the data with the help of statistics and hopes the numbers will

yield an unbiased result that can be generalized to some larger

population.

Research Locale

The researchers conducted the study in General de Jesus

College located in the province of Nueva Ecija.

San Isidro was the capital of Nueva Ecija from 1852 to 1912.

In 1896, the first cry against the Spanish colonial government

was made. 2,000 revolutionaries under General Mariano Llanera

sieged San Isidro. San Isidro, officially the Municipality of San

Isidro, is a 2nd class municipality in the province of Nueva

Ecija, Philippines. According to the 2015 census, it has a

population of 51,612 people.

The town is bounded by Gapan City to the east, the

municipalities of San Leonardo and Jaen to the north, San Antonio

20
General de Jesus College
Vallarta St. Poblacion, San Isidro, Nueva Ecija
to the west, Cabiao to the south-west, San Miguel, Bulacan, to

the southeast and Candaba, Pampanga, to the south.

San Isidro became the capital of the Philippines while Emilio

Aguinaldo was trying to escape from the Americans.

In March 29, 1899, General Emilio Aguinaldo declared San

Isidro as the capital of the Philippines after the revolutionary

capital Malolos, Bulacan was captured by the Americans; this,

however, was short-lived. It was also in San Isidro that General

Frederick Funston planned the capture of Aguinaldo to end the

Philippine-American War. San Isidro Central School The Wright

Institute, established in 1903 in San Isidro, was the first high

school established outside Manila during the American period.

The town was occupied by Japanese troops in 1942, during the

second world war. The combined U.S. and Philippine Commonwealth

ground forces liberated San Isidro and defeated the Japanese

forces in 1945 during the end of the war.

Sample and Sampling Procedure

The researchers selected one hundred (100) respondents from

Senior High School students of General de Jesus College . Every

respondent was survey about the topic. To determine what they

feel, their perception about gender equality, the influences of

using these in their selected using purposive sampling. According

to Arikunto (2010), purposive sampling is the process of

selecting sample by taking subject that is not based on the level

or area, but it is taken based on the specific purpose.

Data Gathering Techniques

1. Data Gathering Instrument

The researchers used data gathering techniques such as

surveys and documentation that they thought would be the best

ways to collect information.

The main instrument used in this study was surveys. The

questions were pre-determined and created prior to the survey,

and often have a limited set of response categories to help the

researchers control the flow of the survey. The questions were

deemed enough to gather the data needed to complete the study.

Hence, it carried the purpose of the study.

23
General de Jesus College
Vallarta St. Poblacion, San Isidro, Nueva Ecija

According to Bhat (2019), a survey is defined as a research

method used for collecting data from a pre-defined group of

respondents to gain information and insights on various topics of

interest. Surveys have a variety of purposes and can be carried

out in many ways depending on the methodology chosen and the

objectives to be achieved.

The following are the set of questions is included in the

interview guide:

1.1 Administration of the Instruments

The first draft of the instrument was submitted to the

undergraduate thesis adviser for corrections, comments and

suggestions, which were then used as bases in revising and

improving the content and word construction. A well-developed

understanding of a topic allows researchers to create a highly

structured interview guide or questionnaire that provides

respondents with relevant, meaningful and appropriate response

categories to choose from for each question.

The guide was the used in the survey of respondents which

took place individually.
