Argumentative Essay
Topic: Bodybuilding competitions and beauty pageants are degrading to
men and women. Write an essay giving your views on this statement.
There exists a popular debate whether or not bodybuilding contests
and beauty pageants degrade men and women. However, this remark
could be argued misleading, considering bodybuilding and beauty
pageants have been proved to increase the sensation of self-
accomplishment of contestants, challenge them to improve themselves
and inspire the individual spectators to work towards a particular goal.
Firstly, A bodybuilder's hard work is rewarded with a tremendous
sense of accomplishment and self-satisfaction. Bodybuilding
competitions and beauty pageants allow the contestants, to ‘show off’
and showcase their enhanced physique, which they had undoubtedly
worked tirelessly to obtain. However, according to an interview
conducted at the “Mr. Olympia” bodybuilding competition in 2020, 80%
of the contestants acknowledged that their hard work had given them a
greater sense of accomplishment throughout their careers. Therefore, it
is evident that the endless effort and preparation that participants
dedicate to such competitions is very rewarding; not only of a physical
reward, but a boosted self-esteem, pride and an overall feeling of great
success and self-accomplishment; extremely opposite to degrading.
Have you ever had the impression someone was ‘better’ than you?
How did you respond? Although other contestants' appearances or
successes may intimidate bodybuilders and beauty pageant contestants,
they typically utilize this as an opportunity to encourage and push
themselves to work harder, improve and surpass their competitors.
Therefore, instead of accepting humiliation from others and getting
depressed as a result, contestants in such competitions divert their
energy into becoming driven by a challenge, in order to outperform the
competition.
Lastly, the majority of viewers, at bodybuilding competitions and
beauty pageants, most likely attend such events to admire the
outstanding physique or appearance related accomplishments of the
contestants and could possibly be inspired by them. For example, if an
unfit person sees the spectacular body transformation of his/her favorite
bodybuilder, from when he first started to exercise to the present time,
that person could be motivated and inspired by this to start exercising,
eat healthier and to generally adopt a healthier lifestyle. Hence, it is clear
to see that spectators at a such competitions are not degraded by the
contestants’ achievements, but instead inspired to improve their own
lifestyles.
In conclusion, it is evident that such competitions do not degrade
men and women, but rather enable contestants to feel accomplished,
driven by a challenge to improve, and to encourage the audience.
