Mechanical Restraint of The Outer Sheet 2 The Safety Philosophy Technical Information 3

This document provides information on Eckelt Vario insulating glass units and facade panels. It discusses two options for Vario units - S-FOR units which have 4 mechanical restraints that act as break points if overloaded, and DZ units which have restraints determined by design loads that can withstand loads without glass failure. It also provides standard compositions and specifications for insulating units and facade panels. Glazing guidelines are outlined to ensure VARIO units are installed correctly without placing undue loads on the mechanical restraints.

Mechanical restraint of the outer

sheet – The Safety philosophy
Generally the outer sheet is adhered to the inner sheet using typical
structural silicone glazing techniques.

Building Control Authorities normally require a state-of-the-art mechanical

restraint to the outer sheet. There are two options in determining the
number and performance of the restraints.

Performance of restraint VARIO S-FOR

• Should the structural bond of the edge seal fail, the integrated Vario
restraints act as determined points of glass breakage when the glass is
mechanically overloaded. The outer sheet is toughened safety glass that
shatters into small pieces. Injury due to large shards is avoided, with the
inner sheet remaining held in the frame.
This application of glazing employs four Vario system fixings.

Performance of – VARIO DZ
• Should the structural bond of the edge seal fail, the integrated Vario
restraints withstand all design loads with a 1.1 Safety Factor without
failure of the outer sheet.
The number of fixings is determined for each project depending on design
wind loads and units sizes.

Glazing Guidelines for VARIO-

Insulating glass
VARIO-Insulating glass is, apart from the mechanical restraints and silicone
edge seal, a conventional double glazed unit. Glazing of VARIO should
therefore also be carried out in accordance with current VEGLA guidelines.

Glazing Blocks
Generally insulating glass must be installed correctly using glazing or
setting blocks. VARIO insulating units must not have setting blocks placed
in the locations of the mechanical restraints. Setting blocks are to be
placed ensuring that no forces are allowed to be transferred to the
mechanical restraints.

Glazing Block Material

The blocks must be durable to permanent load. Their composition must
ensure that performance or characteristics do not change due to influences
of sealants, adhesives or moisture.

Heavy Units
Heavy units of approx. 100 kg should use setting blocks of Polyamide,
Chloroprene or Silicone (not PVC) of minimum thickness 5 mm and Shore
A Hardness of 60-70 degrees.

Supports
The glazing bar should provide a constructive support within the frame
system. It is critical to ensure that the system supports are suitable for long-
term performance in supporting the load of the elements.

Joints between units

Joints are to be made to ensure a sealant-free rebate. The rebate should
allow pressure-equalisation and ensure that any moisture can be drained.
The weatherseal is to be silicone which is compatible with the edge seal of
the unit e.g. Dow Corning 795. Sealant application is to be carried out as
per manufacturers recommendations.

Connection of the frame

The connector (supplied by frame-maker e.g. Schüco Part No. 217604)
which is slotted into the U-shaped channel in the edge seal, is usually
mechanically restricted in ist depth. The fixing of screws is to be as
recommended by the frame-maker, however, the loads applied to the
mechanical restraints must not exceed 20N per fixing.
