Future Tense
The Future Tense is also divided into four sub-tenses.
1. Simple Future.
2. Future Continuous.
3. Future Perfect.
4. Future Perfect Continuous.

1. SIMPLE FUTURE TENSE.


When the verb suggests that the action will happen in
the future, the verb is said to be in the Simple Future
Tense.

Form - Subject + will/shall + Verb Root.

e. g. He + will + write + a letter.


She will sing a song.
They will dig a hole .
The Simple Future Tense is used:

1) to express actions in the future


i.e. action that has still to take place.
e.g. : 1) I shall meet you tomorrow.
2) Bob will go to the library tomorrow.
3) They will arrive soon.
2) to express habitual action in the future:
e.g.: 1) The rainy season will come.

3) to express the speaker's opinions or assumptions


about the future. Verbs such as think, believe, expect,
hope, suppose etc. introduce such opinions.
e.g.: 1) I suppose they will bring enough food for all.
2) I expect he will do better next time.
3) Do you think she will come back?

Q.Complete the sentences using the Simple Future
Tense form of the verb given in the bracket:

1. The boys ______ on the trampoline at the party. (jump)


2. I _____ the marathon this year. (run)
3. Sofia ______ her test on time. (complete)
4. The girls ________ with each other during the weekend. (play)
5. The man _____ his lawn in the afternoon. (water)

2. FUTURE CONTINUOUS TENSE


When the verb suggests that an action will be
continuing at some given point of time in future, the
verb is said to be in the Future Continuous Tense.

Form - Subject + will/shall + be + ing form.


e. g. He + will + be + writing + a letter
She will be singing a song.
They will be digging a hole.
The Future Continuous Tense is used:
1) to express an action which will occur in the usual
course of events.

e.g.: 1) She will be staying here till Sunday.


2) I will be meeting him tomorrow.
3) The children will be playing here this evening.

2) to express future without intention :


e.g. : 1) He won't be staying long.
2) The lady will be coming back this way.
3) Will you be going to England ?

Tense form of the verb given in the bracket:

3.FUTURE PERFECT TENSE

When the verb suggests that an action will be


completed at some point of time in future, the verb
is said to be in the Future Perfect Tense.

Form - Subject + will/shall + have + Past Participle :


e. g. He + will + have + written + a letter.
She will have sung a song.
They will have dug a hole.

The Future Perfect Tense is used to indicate the


completion of an action by a certain future time.
e.g.: 1) They will have left Japan.
2) Before you go to see him, he will have left the
place.
3) I shall have finished the job by 10 A. M. the day
after tomorrow.

1. I _________ my homework by dinner time. (finish)


2. She ________ from the university in two years. (graduate)
3. He ___________ asleep by the time we get home. (fall)

4. FUTURE PERFECT CONTINUOUS TENSE

When the verb suggests that an action was in


progress over a period of time and will end
sometime in future, the verb is said to be in the
Future Perfect Continuous Tense.

Form - Subject + will/shall + have + been+ing form.


e. g. He + will + have + been + writing + a letter.
She will have been singing a song.
They will have been digging a hole.

The future perfect continuous tense shows an


action going on over a period of time that will end
in the future.
e.g.: 1) When he gets his degree, he will have been
studying in Cambridge for four years.
2) By next week, we shall have been doing this job
for six weeks.
3) By 1988, she will have been ranking the first.
