Mystery Novel:
The mystery genre is a type of fiction in which a detective, or other professional,
solves a crime or series of crimes. It can take the form of a novel or short story.
This genre may also be called detective or crime novels.

The terms detective story, mystery, and thriller tend to be employed

interchangeably. The detective story thrills the reader with mysterious
crimes, usually of a violent nature, and puzzles his reason until their
motivation and their perpetrator are, through some triumph of logic,
uncovered. The detective story and mystery are in fact synonymous,
but the thriller frequently purveys adventurous

Examples: Dan Brown’s The Da Vinci Code.

-  Detective fiction is a subgenre of crime fiction and mystery fiction in which

an investigator or a detective—either professional or amateur—investigates a
crime, often murder.
- Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’ A Study in Scarlet ( Sherlock Holmes), Satyajit
Roy’s Sonar Kella (Feluda), G. K. Chesterton’s The Blue Cross (Father
Brown), Dr. Nihar Ranjan Gupta’s Kalo Bhramar (Kiriti)

Philipine Lit.
- 1. Smaller and Smaller Circles – Speaking of which, F. H. Batacan’s work is a brilliant detective
thriller in the same vein as the Hercule Poirot series, although I identify Augusto Saenz
-
- as more of Chesterton’s Father Brown. Those looking to make good thrillers can find inspiration in
this work.

2. Historical Novel:
A Historical novel is a novel set in a period earlier than that of the writing.

Examples:

Thackeray’s Vanity Fair, Charles Dickens’s A Tale of Two Cities, George

Eliot’s Romola and Charles Kingsley’s Westward Ho!
There is a kind of historical novel, little more than a charade, which
frequently has a popular appeal because of a common belief that the
past is richer, bloodier, and more erotic than the present.

2. Example: The Woman Who Had Two Navels

The Woman Who Had Two Navels is a 1961 historical novel by Nick Joaquin, a
National Artist for Literature and leading English-language writer from the
Philippines. It is considered a classic in Philippine literature. It was the recipient of
the first Harry Stonehill award. It tells the story of a Filipino elite woman who is
hallucinating, and is preoccupied with the notion that she has two navels or belly
buttons in order to be treated as an extraordinary person.

The novel is a literary assessment of the influence of the past to the time

encompassing events in the Philippines after World War II, an examination of an
assortment of legacy and heritage and the questions of how can an individual
exercise free will and how to deal with the “shock” after experiencing “epiphanic
recognition.”
3.

Gun Dealer’s Daughter – And finally, for both a period piece and an action thriller, Gina Apostol’s work
has that historical realism that fits seamlessly as a thriller. Set in the Martial Law years, this is a book I
recommend for those wanting to write novels that are period works in character but focusing on the
action rather than relying on its historical character.

4. Realistic Novel:
A fictional attempt to give the effect of realism. This sort of novel is sometimes
called a novel of manner. A realistic novel can be characterized by its complex
characters with mixed  motives that are rooted in social class and operate
according to highly developed social structure. The characters in realistic
novel interact with other characters and undergo plausible and everyday
experiences.
Example: State of War – Intrigue, politics, and the crossing of lives in this
gripping thriller.

5. Children’s Novel:
Children’s novels are narrative fiction books written for children, distinct from
collections of stories and picture books.
