ACTIVITY - Mitosis and Meiosis Comparison

Mitosis and meiosis are cell division processes that produce genetically identical or genetically unique daughter cells, respectively. Mitosis results in two identical daughter cells through prophase, metaphase, anaphase and telophase stages. Meiosis involves two cell divisions and eight stages - prophase I, metaphase I, anaphase I, telophase I, prophase II, metaphase II, anaphase II and telophase II - to produce four non-identical haploid daughter cells from a single parent cell. The number of chromosomes remains the same after mitosis but is halved after meiosis.

ACTIVITY – Mitosis and Meiosis Comparison

Instructions:
1. Cut out the Cell Division Cards and organize them in the correct order for both mitosis and meiosis. HINT:
Both sets of cards (mitosis and meiosis) start with 4 chromosomes in prophase
2. When you think you have them in the correct order and phase, paste them on this page in the appropriate
areas below and on the back of this paper. Use your lecture notes and textbook for help.
3. LABEL: the nucleus, chromosomes, chromatids, centrioles, and spindle fibers on EVERY card where
they can be seen (you will not see all of them on each card.)
