HOW TO USE THIS DIGITIZED LEARNING MODULE
Welcome to the module in Empowerment Technology. This module contains
training materials and activities for you to complete this module.
Distance students will be graded on their participation based on posts after
each class to the course blog. Generally, writing a paragraph that either poses some
questions, makes a comment on the lecture or class discussion, or otherwise
demonstrates that you have thought about the material discussed is sufficient
You are required to go through a series of learning activities in order to complete
each learning outcome of the module. Each of the learning outcomes is provided with
Modules. Follow these activities on your own and answer the self-check at the end of
each learning outcome.

Microsoft Excel
Learning Objective: After reading this MODULE, you should be

4.1 Understanding Spreadsheet
The spreadsheet is a tool used whenever you need to perform calculations that relates
the mathematical financial or scientific data. It is a table of grid that often contains
financial numerical or mathematical information. The word spread comes from the
terms used to refer to two facing pages in the newspaper or magazine.
Uses of spreadsheet
The spreadsheet is a very useful tool. It can be used for different task such
especially by people whose work involves in money or numbers like accountants or
business people.
Spreadsheet is used in tasks such as the following.
1. Calculating income taxes
2. Computing grades
3. Making inventories
4. Paying loans
5. Preparing financial statements

4.2 Types of spreadsheet
Manual spreadsheet
Composed of columns printed ledger and with which one uses a pencil, calculator
and an eraser.
Electronic spreadsheet
A computer generated spreadsheet that makes the basic task of building and
modifying a spreadsheet easier.
Spreadsheet Program
A spreadsheet program is a program that simulates a users manual worksheet on
screen and enables him/her to embed hidden formulas used in performing visible
calculation.
4.3 ELEMENTS OF ELECTRONIC SPREADSHEET
1. ROW
This is a horizontal block of cell numbers sequentially from the top.
2. COLUMN
This is a vertical block of cell identified by unique alphabetical letter.

3. CELL
This is a rectangle formed by the intersection of a row and columns.
4. WORKSHEET
This is the primary document that is used to work with and store data in a
worksheet consist of cells that are organized into columns and rows.
5. ACTIVE CELL INDICATOR
This is the heavy border that indicates an active cell.

6. CELL REFERENCE
This is also called cell address. It is a combination of letter for specific row in
spreadsheet.
7. WORKBOOK
It is the file in an electronic spreadsheet program. It has a worksheets by default
and can contain chart sheets.
8. NAVIGATION BUTTON
These are used for accessing all the worksheet tabs in the workbook.
9. WORKSHEET TABS
These are used for switching to other worksheets within the workbook.

10. RANGE
This is a block of selected cells or a selection of multiple cells.
11. CELL CONTENT
This refers to any type of data entered in the cell.
4.4 Exploring the MS Excel environment
The MS Excel environment is divided in to two windows the application window,
Application window and the worksheet window. The application window represents the
program itself while the worksheet windows which is inside the application window.

Menu bar
This is the horizontal bar below the title bar that contains the name of the menus. A
menu comprises commands that are displayed when you click on a menu name.
Each menu can contain a submenu that appears when you point to a command.
Toolbars
These are the bars with buttons and options that you use to carry out commands.
a.) Standard toolbar- this toolbar has buttons that are commonly used
for commanding files.
b.) Formatting toolbar- this toolbar contains buttons that you can use
in formatting worksheets like changing the font type, font size and color
changing alignment and formatting numbers like currency percent style and
number and decimal.
c.) Drawing toolbar- this toolbar is used in drawing objects of different
shapes and inserting word art and clipart.
Name box
This is the box at the left side and of the formula bar that identifies the address of
the selected cell chart item or drawing object.
Formula bar
This is the bar that displays the data entered into the cell and that allows you to edit
values or formulas in the cell or chart.

This is the window within an office application that displays commonly used
commands as you work on your files.
Status bar
This is the bar near the bottom of the screen that displays information about a
selected commands or an operation in progress the right side of the status bar
shows whether keys such as caps lack, scroll, lock or numlock are turned on.
The Worksheet Window
1. Column
This is the vertical area of the worksheets labeled with letters of the alphabet from A to
IV. The letters are called column header.
2. Row
This is a horizontal area of worksheets labeled with numbers from 1 to 536. The
numbers are called row header.
3. Active Cell
This refers to the selected in which data are entered when you begin typing only one
cell is active is active at a time.
4. Active Cell Indicator
This is the heavy border surrounding the active cell.
5. Worksheet Tabs
These are tabs near the button of a workbook. Window that displays the names of the
worksheets. Click on a worksheets tab to make a worksheet active.

6. Scroll Bars
These are the shaded bars on the right side and at the bottom of a worksheets window.
To scroll to others part of the worksheets, drag any of the bars or click on any of the
arrows in the scroll bars.
4.5 Navigating Around the Worksheet

Ctrl + Arrow key Move to the edge of the current data region (A data
region is a range of cells that contains data and is
surrounded by empty cells a worksheet borders)
Home Move to the beginning of the row

most used row of the rightmost used column

4.6 Mouse Pointers in MS Excel
Here are different forms of mouse pointers in MS excel
Arrow - this is used to select a command button on the menu bar or toolbar.
Thick cross - this is used to select a cell or range of cells in the worksheet.
I beam – this is used to edit data in any textbox or list box.
Fill Handle – this is used to copy the contents of the cell.
Double headed arrow – this is used to adjust the width of the column and the
height of the row on the worksheet.
