Diffusion Lab

An experiment was conducted to investigate diffusion in liquid using Kool Aid and water. Kool Aid was placed in a straw submerged in a cup of water. Observations were made at 10, 20, and 30 minute intervals, showing the Kool Aid particles slowly diffusing and making more of the water pink. By 30 minutes, most of the water was colored by the diffused Kool Aid particles, demonstrating that diffusion can occur in liquids.

Experiment #- 2

Date- May 14,2021

Topic- Diffusion
Aim- To investigate diffusion in liquid.
Apparatus/materials- Kool Aid, glass cup, water, straw
Method- A glass cup was filled with water then Kool Aid was used to fill up to 2
millimeters of the straw. The straw was then placed the glass cup of water. The
water was observed every ten minutes in half an hour(10 minutes, 20 minutes, 30
minutes).
Observations-
Observation of diffusion in liquid
Time Observations
Intervals
10 minutes The Kool Aid
slowly started to
move to the less
concentrated
area of the
water and
slowly making
the water more
pigmented.
20 minutes The Kool Aid
made the water
more pigmented
as compared to
10 minutes
before. The
Kool Aid's
particles slowly
moved up and
around the glass
of water.
30 minutes The Kool Aid’s
particles makes
its way to most
of the lower
concentrated
area of the
water.

Discussion- During the experiment, the Kool Aid’s particles moved up towards
the surface of the water. The water gradually started to change into the colour of
the Kool Aid(red/pink) which is a sign of diffusion taking place in the
water(liquid). The results were as expected, the Kool Aid particles diffused in the
water.
Precaution- Make sure container with water is placed on a flat surface.
Limitation- none
Source of error- none
Conclusion- Diffusion can occur in liquid.
