Part I
The table below shows the mean, median, and mode for each participant group and each
drug condition on the score for the BDI-II.
Young Adults Younger Adults Older Adults Older Adults
Placebo Drug A Placebo Drug A
Mean 26.4 10.4 26.2 23.4
Median 23 10 29 24
Mode 23 10 N/A N/A
The table shows the measures of tendency, that is, the mean, the median, and the mode
for each participant group and each drug condition on the score for the Beck Depression
Inventory-II (BDI-II).
For the young adult participants, the mean BDI-II score for the group administered with
the placebo is 26.4, and the mean BDI-II score for the group administered with Drug A was 10.4.
These values show that, on average, the younger adult participants administered with the placebo
had a higher BDI-II score compared to the young adult participants who received Drug A. The
median BDI-II score value of 23 for the group that received the placebo implies that half of these
participants had a BDI-II score higher than 23 and the other half had a BDI-II score less than 23.
The median BDI-II score value of 10 for the group that received the Drug A implies that half of
these participants had a BDI-II score higher than 10 and the other half had a BDI-II score less
than 10. The observed lower mean BDI-II score in the group that received Drug A as compared
to the mean BDI-II score in the group that received the placebo implies that Drug A is more
effective than a placebo in the treatment of depression among younger adults.
For the older adult participants, the mean BDI-II score for the group administered with
the placebo is 26.2, and the mean BDI-II score for the group administered with Drug A was 23.4.
These values show that, on average, the older adult participants who received the placebo had a
higher BDI-II score compared to the older adult participants who received Drug A. The median

BDI-II score value of 29 for the group that received the placebo implies that half of these
participants had a BDI-II score higher than 29 and the other half had a BDI-II score less than 29.
The median BDI-II score value of 24 for the group that received the Drug A implies that half of
these participants had a BDI-II score higher than 24 and the other half had a BDI-II score less
than 24. The observed lower average BDI-II score in the group that received Drug A as
compared to the average BDI-II score in the group that received the placebo implies that Drug A
is more effective than a placebo in the treatment of depression among older adults.
Part 2
The figure below shows the bar chart representing the mean BDI-II scores for the test conditions
in the clinical study for the Drug A.

representation of the mean BDI-II score for the two groups of participants who received the
placebo and the Drug A. The bars representing the average BDI-II scores for the group that
received the placebo are higher than those representing the group that received Drug A. This
difference indicates that Drug A is more effective than the placebo in the treatment of

depression. Finally, observing the bars for Drug A, it is clear that the Drug A is more effective in
the treatment of depression among younger adults than older adults.
