Addition of Vector: Steps To Add Vectors by Head To Tail Rule

Vectors can be added or subtracted geometrically using the head-to-tail rule. To add vectors: (1) draw the vectors to scale in their directions, (2) place the tail of the second vector at the head of the first, and so on, (3) join the tail of the first vector to the head of the last to obtain the resultant vector. Vector addition is commutative, meaning the order of adding vectors does not change the resultant. To subtract vectors, the direction of the vector being subtracted is reversed before applying the head-to-tail rule.

Long Question No 1

How vectors are added and subtracted geometrically

Answer
ADDITION OF VECTOR
The process in which two or more vectors are combined to
form a single vector is called addition of vector.
The single vector obtained is called resultant vector.
Geometrical Addition Of vector.
Vectors may be added geometrically by head to tail rule.
HEAD TO TAIL RULE.
It is the method in which suitable scale for vectors is selected
and vectors are drawn in their direction.
The tail of second vector is joined with the head of first vector
and so on. The resultant is obtained by joining the tail of first
vector to the head of last vector.

STEPS TO ADD VECTORS BY HEAD TO TAIL RULE

The steps are followed for vectors to add them using head to
tail rule.
(1) Select a suitable scale for the representation of given
vectors
(2) Draw all the vectors in their directions.
(3) Now place the tail of second vector with the head of
first vector and so on.
(4) To obtain the resultant vector join the tail of first
vector with the head of last vector
(5) To find the magnitude of resultant vector measure the
length of resultant vector and convert it according to
scale
(6) For the direction of resultant vector measure the angle
of resultant vector with respect to first vector.

FOR EXAMPLE
 Consider two Vectors A And B Making an angle θA
and θB with x axis as shown in figure below

To add A and B we redraw them according to the

scale and placed the tale of B on the head of A
and join the tail of A with the head of B we get
resultant vector R as shown in figure

ADDITION OF MORE THEN TWO VECTORS

This method can be further extend to number of vectors
I.e Vectors A,B,C,D,E………….N
FOR EXAMPLE
Consider the four vectors A B C D in X,Y plane.
To add these vector redraw them according to selected scale
and joining them by head to tail rule

Resultant vector R will be obtained by joining the tail of first

vector to the head of last vector.
The length of resultant vector will give its magnitude after
converting according to selected scale
angle of resultant vector is measured it along X axis
VECTOR ADDITION IS COMMUTATIVE
Vector addition is commutative I.e what ever the order of
adding vector the resultant will not be effected it will always
as same
R= A+B+C+D =C+D+A+B
SUBTRACTION OF VECTOR
Vectors are subtracted by taking negitive of that vector i.e
reversing the direction of vector.
For Example
If we Have two vectors A and B as shown in figure
If vector B is subtracted from vector A than We first find the
negative of vector B and then joining them by Head to tail rule
