Impact Testing Guidelines

This document outlines procedures for impact testing according to ASTM A370. Impact tests will use Charpy V-notch specimens following the ASTM standard procedures. Additional sampling requirements may be specified for things like heat/heat treatment lots, large parts, castings, and welds. Test specimens will be oriented according to the material grain flow direction or transverse to welds. Acceptance standards will be in the supplementary requirements section and refer to energy levels and test temperatures. Testing apparatus and conditions must meet ASTM A370 section 21 requirements.

NS-1 Sub-Spec 150 – Rev 01

150. IMPACT TESTING

150.1 General

A. General

1. Impact tests shall be performed in accordance with the procedures specified in ASTM A370 using
the Charpy V-notch technique.
2. Impact test specimens, other than Charpy V-notch, may only be used after written approval by the
purchaser.

B. Sampling

1. Each test shall consist of three test specimens taken from a single test coupon or location.
2. As a minimum requirement, a test coupon may only qualify material and parts produced from the
same heat. The test coupon shall be in the same condition of heat treatment as the parts it
qualifies.
3. Due to the large variety of materials and products covered by this specification, specific additional
sampling requirements will be included in the section "Supplementary Requirements" of the NS-1
specification. Examples of these are:

- heat/heat treatment lot testing

- multiple tests on large parts
- keel block test coupons for castings
- multiple tests on critical areas of qualification welds
- testing requirements for materials subjected to continuous heat treatment processes (e.g.
tubulars)

C. Test specimens

1. The test specimens shall be taken from the test coupon with the base of the V-notch
perpendicular to the material surface.
2. Standard size test specimens (10 x 10 mm cross section) shall be used except where there is
insufficient material; in which case the next smaller standard sub size specimen obtainable shall
be used. The reduced dimension of subsize specimens shall be parallel to the base of the
V-notch. Impact values obtained using subsize test specimens shall be converted to equivalent
values for full size specimens using the following conversion factors:

10 x 7.5 mm = 0.833
10 x 5 mm = 0.667

Subsize test specimens smaller than 10 x 5 mm shall not be used.

1. Test specimen orientation

Unless otherwise specified in the section "supplementary requirements" of the relevant NS-1
Specification, test specimens shall have their longest dimension parallel to the principle direction
of grainflow.

The orientation for welded joints is always transverse to the weld.

D. Acceptance standards

1. Refer to the section "supplementary requirements" of the NS-1 Specification for specific
acceptance data such as required energy levels and test temperature.
2. Retesting of non-conforming material is subject to the restrictions of ASTM A370 section 22.
