Activity 2 – Written Exercise
1. Write a reflection paper that will answer these questions: A) How are society, culture and
politics interrelated with one another? and B) Why is it important to study about society, culture
and politics? Your answer must have an example.
Just like a cup of coffee, adding sugar and milk will influence the taste of it, the taste of
the coffee represents the society. Culture influences the society in terms of their physical,
psychological, spiritual, emotional, and social behaviors, While politics is the one who governs
the society, they make the laws of which the society is required to comply to achieve peace in the
community. We encounter this terms all the time even though we do not notice them, as for me, I
encounter these a lot in social media, for instance, when checking the news for our place, I
usually go to Mayor Beng Climaco’s timeline, and if you noticed, she applies the culture of
Zamboanga by speaking the dialect which is “chavacano”, and also by using the “Vinta” type of
designs (which is the designs of the sails on the small boats of Zamboangueños) on her posts.
Mayor Beng Climaco (through her social media) addresses the happenings and announces the
new rules or laws that will be implementing in the territory. So, not only society, culture, and
politics interrelate with each other but also, they work with each other beautifully. Studying
about society, culture, and politics is as important as studying for basic knowledge, for instance,
words, and numbers. It basically becomes our tools in respecting other people to the least.
Studying politics is very essential because it gives a general idea on the things you can do, or for
short, your rights, and the people around you. An example in using your knowledge in politics, is
when you are getting arrested out of nowhere and you are certain that you did not commit any
crime, you have the rights to resist unless they have a warrant of arrest for you. Studying Culture
and Society is also important because it educates you on how you should behave and what you
should expect when interacting with the people in a society, which translates to respecting them
as a society.

2. Write a reaction paper about the article “The Self-Perpetuating Elite of the Philippines” by
Rodel Rodis.
The Self-Perpetuating Elite of the Philippines was the product of the Spanish colonizers
who appointed the most prominent local ilustrados in each town as gobernadorcillos to collect
taxes from the people. And when the Americans came to colonize the Philippines, they continued
this type of scheme. And because of that it spawned the political dynasties we have now. From
that, I feel frustrated towards these SPE, because not only that they did not even feel any
sympathy for the people that they step on, but also because of the damage they caused to the
country. I feel hopeless for the Filipino’s situation, because I think that the gap of the poor and
the rich will only widen as time passes by. The quote from the Filipino senator in the article ( “a
land in which a few are spectacularly rich while the masses remain abjectly poor . . . a land
consecrated to democracy but run by an entrenched plutocracy… a people whose ambitions run
high, but whose fulfillment is low and mainly restricted to the self-perpetuating elite…a land of
privilege and rank – a republic dedicated to equality but mired in an archaic system of caste.”)
struck my heart, and really made me think of our current situation, this quote was kinda like
hitting you in the face with a brick of reality because it was perfect to describe the societal, and
political situations of Philippines.
