EMB 120 Air Conditioning Guide

The document describes the air conditioning system on an Embraer EMB 120 Brasilia aircraft. It details the six main subsystems that make up the air conditioning system: 1) conditioned air distribution, 2) pressurization control, 3) heating, 4) cooling, 5) temperature control, and 6) maintenance tasks related to the maintenance planning guide. Diagrams are included to illustrate the air conditioning system components and layout.

EMB120 Brasilia
MAINTENANCE MANUAL
AIR CONDITIONING SYSTEM - DESCRIPTION AND OPERATION

1. General (figure 1)

A. The air conditioning system control s the airplane interior enINi ronment ,
maintaining it at comfortable levels for t h e passengers and crew.

B. The system is subdivided into conditioned air distribution system (Ref.

21-20-00), pressurization system (Ref. 21-30-OO) , heating system (Ref.
21-40-00) , cool ing system (Ref. 21-50-00) and temperature control system
(Ref. 21-60-00).

2. Conditioned Air Distribution Svstem (fiqure 2 )

A. The distribution system channels temperature controlled air to t h e

cockpit, passenger cabin, toilet and avionics compartment.

0. The main distribution manifold (Ref. 21-21-00) combines cooled

air from the air cooling packs (Ref. 21-50-00) with recirculation air
(Ref. 21-24-00) drawn from the cockpit and passenger cabin.

C. The air is channelled to the cockpit (Ref. 21-22-00) and passenger cabin
(Ref. 21-23-00) through distribution ducts.

D. A gasper air distribution system (Ref. 21-24-00) channels the air drawn
from the main distribution manifold (Ref. 21-21-00) to the cockpit and
passenger cabin.

E. A ventilation system (Ref. 21-26-00) supplies ram air in case of failure

i n the two air cooling packs.

F. An electronic compartment ventilation system (Ref. 21-27-00) keeps the

I air temperature into the compartment within safe operating limits.

G. A windshield defogging system (Ref. 21-28-00) channels air from the

cockpit distribution system to be blown onto the windshield, keeping it
defogged.

3. Pressurization Control System (figure 2)

A. An electropneumatic outflow valve and a pneumatic outflow valve regulate

the amount of air discharged from the airplane ( R e f . 21-30-00).

£3. Positive and negative pressurization safety devices maintain cabin

pressure within preestablished limits.

C. Pressurization indication and warning systems allow the pilots to

monitor the pressurization control system.

4. Heating System (figure 2)

A. A bypass in the warm air bleed line, controlled by the temperature

control valve (Ref. 21-60-OO), regulates the amount o f warm air to be
mixed with cooled air drawn from the air cooling packs (Ref. 21-50-00)
to maintain cabin temperature at pre-selected levels.

5. Cooling System (figure 2)

A. Two air cooling packs receive hot air bled from the engines or from APU
(Ref. 36-00-00) and supply cooled air to the distribution system (Ref.
21-20-00).

B. An air ventilation system provides ground and in-flight cooling for the
pack heat exchangers (Ref. 21-51-00).
