Why did you choose this particular design?
I choose this design because of the meaning and
sentimental importance to me. I choose this
because, as I explained in my prior response to your
request. Sometimes it takes me a long time to
decide on a tattoo design because I only have so
much flesh and so many ideas. This is frequently
how it works. Either my artist will come up with
something on his own, which I will view and go,
"Damn, I like that, give it to me." Or I'll draw
something, give it to him, and he'll come up with his
own "tattoo-ified" version of the same basic idea. It
works out sometimes, and it doesn't always. Tattoo
art isn't the same as art on paper; for a variety of
reasons, a piece that looks great on paper doesn't
always convert into a fantastic tattoo design.
What does the image symbolises or represent to
you?
The tinatalaaw (which literally means “day”) tattoo
design represents the passing of time. The tattoo is
made up of two parts: one that is blank and one
that is blackened to represent “day” and “night,”
respectively. Depending on how Kalinga people
view their tattoos, it can have a variety of
meanings.
Is your tattoo a memorial tattoo? If so what or
who is being commemorated?
One is in memory of my Lola, another is an
affirmation for me that being an elderly woman
doesn’t have to mean being boring, and it hides a
large back surgery scar, and yet another is a
symbolic meaning about the day, which represents
the days I spend with my lola, and the night, which
represents my lola’s downfall or death.
Does your tattoo have any historical significance or
was it inspired by something else?
Batok is a thousand-year tattooing tradition that is a
little more painful than modern methods. This tattoo
was inspired by Batok. Kalinga tattoo ink is
manufactured from locally sourced resources. A sharp
thorn needle from a calamansi tree pierces the skin
with charcoal mixed with water inside a coconut shell.
If you choose where your particular tattoo, where it
will be and why?
It was my intention to create it into an armband
tattoo. A solid black armband tattoo has traditionally
been associated with the loss of a loved one. Black is,
after all, the color of death and sadness. The form
effectively represents the act of wearing the
deceased’s remembrance on one’s sleeve. On a more
positive note, the solid armband tattoo can also
represent strength and good fortune.
