Differential Manometer:
1. A differential manometer is connected at the two points A and B of two pipes as
shown in figure. The pipe A contains a liquid of specific gravity 1.5 while pipe B
contains a liquid of specific gravity of 0.9. The pressures at A and B are 1 kgf/cm 2 and
1.8 kgf/cm2 respectively. Find the difference in mercury levels in the differential
manometer. (Assume gravity = 9.81 m/s2) [Ans: 18.1 cm]

2. A differential manometer is connected at the two points A and B of two pipes as
shown in figure. At B the air pressure is 9.81 N/cm 2 (abs.), find the absolute pressure
at A. (Assume gravity = 9.81 m/s2) [Ans: 8.887 N/cm2]

3. Find out the differential reading ‘h’ of an inverted U-tube manometer containing oil of
specific gravity 0.7 as the manometric fluid when connected across two pipes A and B
as shown in figure, conveying liquids of specific gravities 1.2 and 1.0 and immiscible
with manometric fluid. Pipes A and B are located at the same level and assume the
pressures at A and B to be equal. (Assume gravity = 9.81 m/s2) [Ans: 20 cm]

4. An inverted U-tube manometer is connected to two horizontal pipes A and B through
which water is flowing. The vertical distance between the axes of these pipes is 30
cm. When an oil of specific gravity 0.8 is used as a gauge fluid, the vertical heights of
water columns in the two limbs of this manometer (when measured from the
respective centre lines of the pipes) are found to be same and equal to 35 cm.
Determine the difference in pressure between the pipes. (Assume gravity = 9.81m/s2)
[Ans: 2.354 kPa]
