DEPARTMENT OF CIVIL AND ENVIRONMENTAL ENGINEERING

TCE 2112 SOIL MECHANICS (AY 2021/2022)

CA Assignment 1 – Soil Classification
Due Date for Submission: Sunday 5 September 2021

1. A soil sample was collected from a site near MacRitchie Reservoir. A sieve analysis
was performed and the data recorded in Table 1 below.

Sieve
Sieve Mass of Soil
Opening
Number Retained (g)
(mm)
4 4.75 0
7 2.8 492
18 1 898
40 0.425 295
50 0.355 213
80 0.18 130
170 0.09 160
Pan - 20
Total - 2208

(i) Which local geological formation does this soil sample likely belong to?
(ii) Plot the particle size distribution curve for this soil.
(iii) What is the USCS classification of this soil?

2. A particle size distribution analysis on a soil A gave the following results:

Sieve Size (mm) Mass Retained (g)
20 12
10 40.8
6.3 10.8
2 3.6
0.6 4.8
0.425 --
0.300 13.2
0.212 --
0.150 --
0.063 28.8
Passing 0.063 6

(Note : the symbol -- means that no measurement was taken.)

TCE2112 SOIL MECHANICS AY 2021/2022

Plot the particle size distribution curve for Soil A. Determine the effective size (D10),
and the uniformity coefficient. Also, classify Soil A.

3. A particle size distribution analysis on a soil B gave the following results:

Sieve Size (mm) Mass Retained (g)

20 --
10 --
6.3 --
2 --
0.6 --
0.425 --
0.300 --
0.212 --
0.150 0
0.063 11.25
0.04 16.25
0.02 21.25
0.006 17.5
0.002 8.75
Passing 0.002 50

Soil B was found to have a liquid limit of 48 percent and a plastic limit of 21 per cent.

Plot the particle size distribution curve for Soil B. Also, classify Soil B.

Submission Details:
1. The assignment should be submitted for grading on or before Sunday 5
September 2021.
2. Please do a soft copy submission through LumiNUS.
3. Your graphs of the particle size distributions can be plotted by hand on printed
graph paper, or they can be plotted using Excel spreadsheet.
4. If you are plotting the graphs by hand, please scan the completed graphs, and
any related calculation workings, into the pdf format for submission.
5. Indicate clearly (on the top left hand corner of each page) the question number
for the graph/answers/calculations shown on that page.
6. Please combine all the different pages into one single pdf file. Please name this
pdf file using your student number starting with A, e.g. A0123456.pdf.
7. Please upload your combined pdf file to the LumiNUS folder
