VISIT REPORT
INTRODUCTION:
Kalapet Health centre located in ECR, Pondicherry 2kms away
from PIMS. It is under government of Pondicherry under ministry of
health and family welfare and it is collaborated with PIMS and it runs
24hrs a day.
Medical officer, Staff nurses, Pharmacists, Lab technician, ophthalmic
technician and health workers. Work in the centre in providing medical care,
emergency services for the nearby community.
PHC has a population of 20,000- 30,000 and it has 2 subcenters, it covers
Schools of 11 Government Schools and 6 private schools and also it covers 16
Anganwadi under Kalapet PHC. It was reconstructed and opened on
01.03.2006. It covers population of areas which includes- Pillaichavady, Chinna
Kalapet, Periya Kalapet, Ganapathichettikulam. This PHC is one of the oldest
centre which is running for past 55years.
PHC runs various clinics for each day in a week. On Monday- Anemia clinic,
Tuesday- Geriatric/Diabetes/Hypertension, Wednesday-
Asthma/COPD/Antenatal clinic, Thursday- Immunization clinic, Friday- Heart
diseases, Saturday- Adolescent clinics and SWB activities.
Dental department is running on Tuesday and Friday. PHC running 24/7 hours.
And the OPD timing is from 8am to 10.30 am., for Casualty from 10am to
next day 8am.

GENERAL OPD
It is on all days excepts on weekends from 8-10.30am conduction by
CHO and after 12pm by PIMS doctors.
Anemia OPD
It is conducted on every Monday by doing general examination if finding
out the signs and symptoms of anemia then checking the Hemoglobin level of
the patient. According to HB level prescribing iron and folic acid tablets and
also iron sucrose injection, giving health education regarding iron rich diet.
Ophthalmic clinic
It is conducted on every Wednesday, Friday by technician who do an
examination (basic).
DM/HTN CLINIC
It is conducted on every Tuesday and Friday activities include:
Checking RBS, fasting and post prandial
Samples for HbA1c creatinine, lipid profile are taken along with urine
sample.
Health education on diabetic diet, life style modification, self-
administration of insulin
Check blood pressure
WELL BABY CLINIC/ IMMUNIZATION CLINIC:
It is conducted on every Thursday, screening is done for babies and
children which include growth assessment like length, weight and head
circumference measured and marked on growth chart and compared with
previous finding to assess believe Growth and Development.
Health education given on:
Importance of breast feeding, good nutrition both mother and child.
Immunization for babies also given.
Systemic examination – vision, hearing acuity and any
development delay or other disease will be monitored.
Immunization was done to all under five children with regular follow
by ANM and also ASHA.
ANTENATAL CLINIC
Conducted on every Wednesday. They provide education regarding
immunization, diet supplement during pregnancy and lactation.
Motivation breast feeding and use of contraceptive
It is supervised by lady health visit and ANM staffs.
ADOLESCENT CLINIC
Conducted every Saturday by ANM staff’s health education to girls of
age between 11 – 19 years. Sanitary napkins are provided to the children and
also education on menstrual hygiene.

RESPONSIBILITIES OF ASHA:
8 ASHA are there in the centre, who are
o Creating awareness and giving information about determinants of
health
o Counselling of women
o Work with Lady health visitor.
RESPONSIBILITIES OF HEALTH ASSISTANT
2 health assistants are there in the centre who are send to area visit for
collecting material smear sample for patient with fever more than7 days.
Malaria smear sample is also taken in centre after 10.30 am.
SCHOOL HEALTH PROGRAMME
WIFS
Weekly iron and folic acid supplementation given to children of
government school only every month on Monday 6 months once tab.
Albendazole deworming to all children is done. 5 school come under
the PHC which include 4 primary, 1middle school, 1 special school and
4 higher secondary school.
Immunization
In month July to September health assistant goes to all school
and administer vaccine DPT (1st std) TT (5th – 10th std students)
In area
Weekly water sample collection done every 15 day once. Water
collected from public tap are sample sent for testing in Gorimedu.
Other investigation such as dengue, malaria, chicken Guinea, swine flu,
cholera, sample taken from people having fever for long duration on
visit to respective area.
DOTS
DOTS packets distributed to patient with TB free of cost and
also monitored and follow up is done.
SIDDHA AND AYURVEDHA
The team consist of 2 medical officer 1 pharmacy and 1 attender. 60 – 70
patient this clinic every day a get treatment for complaints backpain, knee pain
skin problems and so on.

CONCLUSION:
This visit to Primary health centre, Kalapet was very useful and informative.
We have good exposure about PHC activities through the Visit. We also gained
knowledge regarding organizational pattern, staffing pattern, activities carried
out, functions and responsibilities of the health personnel, health related
problems and services to update our knowledge and also came to know the
importance of Siddha and Ayurveda. We thank Mrs. Suganya, Faculty,
CONPIMS, who accompanied us for the visit and briefed us about the Primary
