Adverbs - Exercises for Class 8

An adverb is a word that adds meaning to a verb, an adjective or another adverb. It tells you how a
thing is done, when it is done or where it is done. An adverb can modify a verb, an adjective or
another adverb.

Adverbs are of the following kinds:

Adverbs of time show when an action is done. Example: The children are playing now.
Adverbs of manner show how or the manner in which an action is done. Example: Sachin
works quietly.
Adverbs of degree show how much or to what extent a things is done. Example: The theatre
was completely full.
Adverbs of place show where an action is done. Example: Due to rains, the guests moved
inside.
Adverbs of frequency tell how often or how frequently an action takes place. Example: Priya
is often mistaken for her twin sisters.
Interrogative adverbs are used to ask questions about time, manner, and place. Example:
Where are you working?
Relative adverbs refer to the thing or person that the pronoun refers to. Example: I rested
whenever I got an opportunity.
Sentence adverbs modify a complete sentence and not just part of it. Such words are usually
formed by adding ‘-ly’ to adjectives. Example: Clearly, they san well and won the competition.
Adverbs of reason logically connect the conclusion with the argument made in the previous
sentence. Example: I am not feeling well. Hence, I am unable to join you.
