The Effectiveness of Makahiya (Mimosa Pudica) Leaves Extract As An Alternative Ovicide Against Dengue Mosquito (Aedes Aegypti) Eggs

This document presents a study on using extracts from Makahiya (Mimosa pudica) leaves as an alternative ovicide against Aedes aegypti mosquito eggs. The study aims to determine the effectiveness of different concentrations of Makahiya leaf infusion in killing mosquito eggs when exposed for 10 minutes. It seeks to reduce mosquito proliferation and prevent egg hatching in a more affordable and sustainable way. The document outlines the background, problem statement, objectives, significance and scope of the study. The methodology to be used in the experiment is also mentioned.

INTRODUCTION

Rationale of the Study

Mosquitoes are one of the most unwanted and harmful pests known to man.

Mosquitoes are carriers, or vectors, for a variety of diseases, in addition to being a

nuisance. They are humanity's most lethal diseases, and they are the number one

public enemy in the world. Every year, mosquito-borne diseases kill millions of people

around the world, with a disproportionate impact on children and the elderly. In feeding

on blood, some of the transmit extremely harmful human and livestock diseases, such

as malaria, yellow fever, filariasis and dengue. Some authorities argue accordingly that

mosquitoes are the most dangerous animals to Earth.

Throughout the history, many plants have been used as an alternative

insecticide, ovicide, and repellents. Ovicides are any substances that are designed to

kill eggs, especially the eggs of insects.

The Makahiya plant is widely distributed in the Philippines in open, moist, waste

places, open grasslands and open thickets, at low and medium altitudes in settled

areas. The seeds produce a toxic alkaloid called mimosine, which can kill larva. It may

also be used as an expectorant, analgesic, antispasmodic, alternant, sedative, and

antidepressant.
Statement of the Problem

This study aims with the probe of Makahiya leaves as an ovicide for mosquito

eggs. Specially, it seeks to reply the undermentioned questions and inquiries:

1. Is Makahiya leaves extract responsible for the activity against mosquito eggs?

2. Is there a significant effect of Makahiya leaves extract in terms of mortality

rate of the mosquito eggs?

3. What are the effects of Makahiya infusion to the mosquito eggs after exposing

it to:

a. 80% of Makahiya infusion and 20% H20 (water) within 10 minutes

b. 60% of Makahiya infusion and 40% H2O (water) within 10 minutes

c. 100% of Makahiya infusion within 10 minutes

Objectives of the Study

The main purpose of this study is to lessen the proliferation of mosquitoes or

prevent the eggs from hatching and turning into a mosquito using the Makahiya

(Mimosa pudica) leaves extract as an ovicide. Specially, the study aims to:

1. To know the effects of Makahiya leaves extract to Mosquito Eggs.

2. To know if there is a significant effect of Makahiya leaves extract in terms

of mortality rate of the Mosquito Eggs.

3. To know the effect of Makahiya infusion to the Mosquito eggs after

exposing it to the given works.

Significance of the Study

People who can afford medicinal plants are using them as a result of the rising

and high prices of medication in drugstores. The findings of this study would be useful

to a wide range of people, including students, teachers, parents, and the government.

The Makahiya (Mimosa pudica) leaves extract will be used as a ovicide in this study to

reduce or prevent the eggs from hatching.

Furthermore, this study may serve as reference material for future researchers

as they intend to conduct a research that may be related to this study. It will also give

other researchers an idea and insights about Makahiya leaves extract and it’s uses.

Scope and Delimitation

This survey aims to research the capableness of Makahiya leaves infusion as an

ovicide for mosquito eggs. It is focused on the effectivity of the solutions in holding the

ability to kill an egg. The survey will be conducted in Purok 10 Batangan Valencia City,

Bukidnon. It involves an experimentation utilizing the said solutions, affecting the usage

of the roots of the Makahiya works. This survey is focused in supplying people with a

less expensive and more resourceful manner of killing mosquito larvae.

The variables involved in this survey doing the Makahiya leaves infusion are stop

watch, mosquito eggs, water (H2O) and container. The said solution is straight applied

to the mosquito eggs samples.
