1. Chromatic dispersion can be represented by a frequency-dependent propagation constant
β(ω).
Suppose the propagation constant of a single-mode fiber is given as follows
β(ω) = Aω0 + B(ω − ω0 ) + C(ω − ω0 )2
where ω0 corresponds to the wavelength used at 1550 nm.
At the wavelength of use, the fiber has a group velocity of vg = 2×108 m/s and a chro-
matic dispersion parameter D=15ps/nm-km. Find the values of B and C in the above
expression.
2. For an optical fiber, the group delay T over a wavelength range is given as
T = A + Bλ2 + Cλ−2
Show that the dispersion at a wavelength is given as
4 !
λS0 λ0
D(λ) = 1−
4 λ
where S0 is the slope of D(λ) at zero dispersion wavelength.
3. Consider a multi-mode step-index fiber of core radius 50µm, refractive index of core
1.46, fractional refractive index difference of 2% and operating with material dispersion
coefficient of 40ps/nm-km at 1550nm. The fiber is illuminated with an LED source
operating at 1550nm with spectral width of 11THz.
(a) Find the dispersion if a pulse is sent over a 10km link. (Neglect contribution from
waveguide dispersion)
(b) If we replace the multimode fiber with a single mode fiber, find the spectral width
of the source that will ensure the total dispersion to be less than 0.5ns.
4. The material dispersion parameter for a glass fiber is 20ps nm−1 km−1 at a wavelength of
1.5µm. Estimate the pulse broadening due to material dispersion within the fiber when
light is launched from an injection laser source with a peak wavelength of 1.5µm and an
rms spectral width of 2nm into a 30km length of the fiber.
5. The empirical relation for b-V for the fundamental mode can be expressed as
2
B
b= A−
V
where A=1.1428 and B=0.996. Assuming that only waveguide dispersion is present in
the fiber, find the bit-rate distance product that could be achieved when the signal is
propagated in a fiber with n2 =1.48, ∆=0.2% at wavelength of (a)1310nm (b)1550nm.
Assume that the source used at 1310nm has a width of 2nm and 0.01nm at 1550nm.
