BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY
Education has been a significant part of the society. As of today, education
plays a vital role in the success of every individual, however, education has
changed through time. Students nowadays experience a much faster pace than
students’ generations ago (Cordz, 2017). Students are often looked upon as the
building blocks of the society thus the present generation needs a competitive
advantage which includes their academic success among others. However, It is
evident that with the growing knowledge and fast pace of technology, the
students’ academic workload and academic stress are increasing and a
significant addition to this increasing stress is homework (Galloway, Conner &
Pope, 2013)As Cited by Pope (2013), busy world discourages learning and
tolerates doing homework to simply earn points
Student can experience having homework during weekends. The students can’t
blame the teachers in this scenario because in the first place, they don’t have
enough time to finish all the students activities that’s why the students have
an activity in home called “Homework”. One of the variables being scrutinized
is homework. How much to give, how often to give it and what it should in tail
are all the questions that researcher studying the homework achievement
relation.
The people all know the meaning of home work but for others, homework as a
lot of meaning. Homework is on way to increase the amount of time on task
and promote student success. The purpose of homework needs to be cleared to
all students so that they can understand how it will help the society to
succeed.
Perception is the organization, identification, and interpretation
of sensory information in order to represent and understand the presented
information, or the environment. Schacter, Daniel (2011). But according to
Goldstein (2009) perception involves signals that go through the nervous
system, which in turn result from physical or chemical stimulation of
the sensory system.
Assigning homework with a purpose means that through completing the
assignment, the student will be able to obtain new knowledge, a new skill, or
have a new experience that they may not otherwise have. Homework should
not consist of a rudimentary task that is being assigned simply for the sake of
assigning something. Homework should be meaningful. It should be viewed as
an opportunity to allow students to make real-life connections to the content
that they are learning in the classroom. It should be given only as an
opportunity to help increase their content knowledge in an area.
Homework is defined as the time students spend outside the classroom in
assigned learning activities. Anywhere Schools believes the purpose of
homework should be to practice, reinforce, or apply acquired skills and
knowledge. We also believe as research supports that moderate assignments
completed and done well are more effective than lengthy or difficult ones done
poorly. Homework serves to develop regular study skills and the ability to
complete assignments independently.
Homework is an opportunity for teachers to provide individualized instruction
geared specifically to an individual student. Anywhere Schools embraces the
idea that each student is different and as such, each student has their own
individual needs. We see homework as an opportunity to tailor lessons
specifically for an individual student meeting them where they are and bringing
them to where we want them to be.
Title: Perception of Grade 11 students towards the No Homework Policy in
Mangaldan National High School S.Y. 2019-2020.
STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM
This study aims to determine the Perception of Grade 11 Students
toward the No Homework Policy in Mangaldan National High School S.Y. 2019-
2020
Specifically, this sought answered the following questions:
1. What are the opinions of the students about the NO HOMEWORK POLICY
DURING WEEKENDS?
2. Does the students comprehend about the NO HOMEWORK POLICY DURING
WEEKENDS?
3. What are the responds of the Student about the NO HOMEWORK POLICY
DURING WEEKENDS?
SCOPE AND DELIMITATION
This study entitled Perception of Grade 11 students in Mangaldan
National High School towards the NO WORK POLICY. This research is limited
to the grade 11 students only.
The scope of this study is on Perception of Grade 11 students in
Mangaldan National High School towards the NO WORK POLICY. The mains
purpose is to identify the perception of the students if homework is necessary
to do during weekends. The study is conducted to the Grade 11 students of
S.Y. 2019-2020. This study aims to know if homework is necessary to do
during weekends.
SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY
The result of this study may be beneficial to the following:
TEACHERS. This research may help the teachers to be aware in giving
homework to their students during weekends and they will know any impacts
of giving a homework in the students.
STUDENTS. This research will help to enlighten the students about the no
homework policy during weekends. And the researchers may help the students
determine if homework is necessary to do during weekends.
PARENTS. This research may help the parents to be aware of the time that
they will spent with their children during weekends
THE RESEACHERS. The outcome of this research will be beneficial to the
neither present researchers or the future researchers. This study may be one of
the basis that a new theory in learning will rise.
DEFITION OF TERMS
Homework is a set of tasks assigned to students by their teachers to be
completed outside the class. Common homework assignments may include
required reading, a writing or typing project, mathematical exercises to be
completed, information to be reviewed before a test, or other skills to be
practiced.
Performance-The execution of an action; is completion of a task with
application of knowledge, skills and abilities
Time-the measured or measurable period during which an action, process, or condition
exist or continues; Time is a component quantity of various measurements used
to sequence events, to compare the duration of events or the intervals between
them, and to quantify rates of change of quantities in material reality or in
the conscious experience.
Students-These are the person who attends a school to study; s primarily a
person enrolled in a school or other educational institution who attends
classes in a course to attain the appropriate level of mastery of a subject under
the guidance of an instructor and who devotes time outside class to do
whatever activities the instructor assigns that are necessary either for class
preparation or to submit evidence of progress towards that mastery.
Parents these are the person who brings up and cares for another; is a
caregiver of the offspring in their own species. In humans, a parent is the
caretaker of a child (where "child" refers to offspring, not necessarily age).
CHAPTER II
REVIEW OF THE RELATED LITERATURE
Homework contributes toward building responsibility, self-discipline, and
lifelong learning habits. It is the intention of the Anywhere School staff to
assign relevant, challenging, meaningful, and purposeful homework
assignments that reinforce classroom learning objectives. Homework should
provide students with the opportunity to apply and extend the information they
have learned complete unfinished class assignments, and develop
independence.
Homework has been identified in numerous studies and articles as a
dominant or significant source of stress and anxiety for students. Bauwens &
Hourcade (1992). But according to Bempechat (2004) says that homework
develops students' motivation and study skills. In a single study, parents and
teachers of middle school students believed that homework improved students'
study skills and personal responsibility skills.
Homework as defined by Cooper (1989), is “any task assigned to students
by school teachers that is meant to be carried out during non-school hours”
Means that students don’t need to study alone. Students have a teacher to
guide them, to give instruction what they are going to do in school. In student’s
home, Student’s don’t have a teacher beside them, sometimes the student’s
parents are busy in some important matter so they can’t help their children
when it comes to
Homework.
Keith (1982) defines homework as “the amount of time students spend in
studying outside of class”. This definition does not similar with the other
meaning because it does not describe
what homework is rather it describe on variable of homework, which is time
spent on completing it.
According to Trautwein & Köller (2003) among teenagers, students who
spend somewhat more time on homework generally have higher grades, and
somewhat higher test scores than students who spend less time on homework.
But according to Cooper, Robinson & Patall (2006) Very high amounts of
homework cause students' academic performance to worsen, even among older
students. Students who are assigned homework in middle and high school
score somewhat better on standardized tests, but the students who have 60 to
90 minutes of homework a day in middle school or more than two hours in
high school score worse.
According to Cheung & Leung-Ngai (1992).Studies on the relation
between homework and health are few compared to studies on academic
performance. Homework can cause tension and conflict in the home as well as
at school, and can reduce students' family and leisure time. In the Cheung &
Leung-Ngai (1992) survey, failure to complete homework and low grades where
homework was a contributing factor was correlated with greater conflict; some
students have reported teachers and parents frequently criticizing their work.
In the MetLife study, high school students reported spending more time
completing homework than performing home tasks. Kohn (2006) argued that
homework can create family conflict and reduce students' quality of life. The
authors of Sallee & Rigler (2008), both high school English teachers, reported
that their homework disrupted their students' extracurricular activities and
responsibilities. However, Kiewra et al. (2009) found that parents were less
likely to report homework as a distraction from their children's activities and
responsibilities. Galloway, Conner & Pope (2013) recommended further
empirical study relating to this aspect due to the difference between student
and parent observations.
Some educators argue that homework is beneficial to students, as it
enhances learning, develops the skills taught in class, and lets educators verify
that students comprehend their lessons. Proponents also argue that homework
makes it more likely that students will develop and maintain proper study
habits that they can use throughout their educational career.
Proponents claim that assigning homework to young children helps them
learn good study habits. Essentially, they advocate for doing potentially
unnecessary homework from approximately age five to ten as a way of
practicing for doing necessary homework from age 10 to 15. No research has
ever been conducted to determine whether this claim has any merit. Bazelon,
Emily (2006-09-14)
According to Harris Cooper (1989), there are the top 14 reasons why
homework is important. 1) It improves your child’s thinking and memory 2) It
helps your child develop positive study skills and habits that will serve him
orher well throughout life 3) Homework encourages your child to use time
wisely4) It teaches your child to work independently 5) Homework teaches your
childto take responsibility for his or her work 6) It allows your child to review
and practice what has been covered in class 7)It helps your child to get
ready for the next day’s class 8) Homework helps your child learn to use
resources, such aslibraries, reference materials, and computer Web sites to
find information 9) Itencourages your child to explores subjects more fully than
classroom time permits10) It allows your child to extend learning by applying
skills to new situations. 11) It helps your child integrate learning by applying
many different skills to asingle task, such as book reports or
science projects12) Howework helps parents learn more about what your child
is learning inschool13) It allows parents to communicate about what he or she
is learning14) It encourages parents to spark your child’s enthusiasm.
“Therefore, no homework/assignment shall be given during the weekends
for pupils to enjoy their childhood, and spend quality time with their
parents without being burdened by the thoughts of doing a lot of homework,”
Luistro (2010) In his explanation, Luistro said that many parents have been
complaining about not being able to spend quality time with their children
during the weekends because of too much homework.
A recent study led by an Indian University professor found that
traditional homework assignments won’t improve a student’s grades but could
boost standardized test scores. (Adam Maltese 2002)
Homework research dates back to the early 1900s. However, no
consensus exists on the general effectiveness on homework. Trautwein & Köller
(2003) Results of homework studies vary based on multiple factors, such as the
age group of those studied and the measure of academic performance.
Galloway, Conner & Pope (2013) surveyed 4,317 high school students
from ten high-performing schools, and found that students reported spending
more than 3 hours on homework daily. 72% of the students reported stress
from homework, and 82% reported physical symptoms. The students slept an
average of 6 hours 48 minutes, lower than the recommendations prescribed by
various health agencies.
A study done at the University of Michigan in 2007 concluded that the
amount of homework given is increasing. In a sample taken of students
between the ages of 6 and 9 years, it was shown that students spend more
than 2 hours a week on homework, as opposed to 44 minutes in 1981.
A 2007 study of American students by MetLife found that 89% of
students felt stressed from homework, with 34% reporting that they "often" or
"very often" felt stressed from homework. Stress was especially evident among
high school students. Students that reported stress from homework were more
likely to be deprived of sleep. Markow, Amie & Margot (2007).
Historically, homework was frowned upon in American culture. With few
students able to pursue higher education, and with many children and
teenagers needing to dedicate significant amounts of time to chores and
farmwork, homework was disliked not only by parents, but also by some
schools. The students' inability to keep up with the homework, which was
largely memorizing an assigned text at home, contributed to students dropping
out of school at a relatively early age. Attending school was not legally required,
and if the student could not spend afternoons and evenings working on
homework, then the student could quit school. Onion, Rebecca (2019-10-04).
The positive effects of homework were related to certain age groups of
students. Highschool students benefited more from homework than did
younger students. This could be because younger students were more easily
distracted, and/or had not developed positive studyhabits (Cooper 1989b;
Hoover-Dempsey et al., 2001; Leone & Richards, 1989; Muhlenbruck,Cooper,
Nye, & Lindsay, 2000). Homework did not benefit students academically below
highschool age (Cooper, 1989b; Queensland Department of Education and the
Arts, 2004).
Moreover, researchers seemed to agree that homework reflected various
purposes (Brock,Lapp, Flood, Fisher, & Han, 2007; Cooper et al., 2006; Corno
& Xu, 2004; Epstein & VanVoorhis, 2001; Gill & Schlossman, 2003;
Muhlenbruck et al., 2000; Warton, 2001). Epstein and Van Voorhis (2001)
identified ten purposes for doing homework. They included
practice, preparation, participation, personal development, parent child
relations, parent Voorhis(2004), who worked with teachers for a long time,
further categorized these purposes into threegroups: instructional (i.e., the first
four purposes), communicative (i.e., the next three purposes),and political (i.e.,
the final three purposes). Taking a slightly different prospective, Cooper et al.
(2006) indicated that homework purposes could be classified into two broad
categories which were instructional and non-instructional. The instructional
category included review, practice, preparation, extension, and integration. On
the other hand, the non-instructional category included communication
between parent and child, fulfilling directives from school administrators,
public relation, and punishing students. Parents and teachers always identified
and perceived these various purposes of homework as important (Cooper et al.,
2006; Xu, 2005
Homework policy is under the DepEd Memorandum No. 392 s.
2010.Many people are arguing and debating if no homework policy should be
published in the Philippines. Homework or assignments have been part of
pupil’s lives in their schooling. Common homework/assignment may include a
period of reading to be done and writing to be completed, problems to be solved
and projects to be worked on, among others. The purpose of which is for
the pupils toin crease their knowledge and improve their abilities and skills.
House Bill 388, teachers are prohibited from giving assignments to their
students if they will be done during weekends (Saturday and Sunday).
According to the proponent of this measure, homework has negative effects on
children in other countries because it takes the time that is supposed to be
allotted for their families.
HB No. 3883, which seeks to eliminate homework on weekends for all
elementary and high school students. Seeks to “promote and protect the
physical, moral, spiritual, intellectual, and social well-being of the youth.” This
is so that students can “enjoy their free time from the precisions of school
during weekends and to be able to have a quality time with their family and
friends.”
Homework is also prohibited in HB 3611 for the health of the children.
According to the proponent, because of homework, children always insist on
bringing their books home, which are heavy to carry. Aside from banning
homework, it is also stated in the proposal that classrooms must have lockers
installed for the children to place their books.
House Bill (HB) No. 3611, which seeks to remove homework as a
requirement and have Kinder to Grade 12 students do academic activities
solely within school premises. The bill also seeks to prohibit students from
taking textbooks home in order to “lighten the physical burden of
schoolchildren,” who, Escudero said, often have to carry heavy bags due to
schoolwork that has to be done beyond the school. This will apply to Kinder to
Grade 6 students.
The secretary of the Department of Education supports these proposals,
with the belief that there are times when children don’t do their homework. The
secretary even added that DepEd even encourages teachers not to give their
students homework for the same reasons enumerated in the proposed
measures.
However, for the Alliance of Concerned Teachers or ACT, it is impossible
for teachers not to give students homework under the K to 12 basic education
program. The context and scope of the current curriculum is deliberately
comprehensive, and the time spent in school is not enough for the children to
learn what they are supposed to learn. For the Teachers’ Dignity Coalition,
homework should not be seen as a way to torture students. The continuous
learning of children outside school is important for them to have discipline and
to learn to be responsible.
The two sides have valid points. On one side, there are negative effects of
taking home school-related work, especially if it takes time away from the
children that need to rest, help in household chores, or rob them of their play
time. On the other side, homework helps sharpen the learning process of
children. In the end, children’s education—whether inside or outside the school
—cannot be measured alone by their ability to finish assignments. Teachers
help mold the children, but their basic physical, educational and
spiritual formation rest exclusively with their parents.
Much like what Pope Francis said in Amoris Laetitia, teaching children is
the most serious duty of parents and their primary right. According to 2
Corinthians 12:14, “Now I am ready to visit you for the third time, and I will not
be a burden to you, because what I want is not your possessions but you. After
all, children should not have to save up for their parents, but parents for their
children,” and this saving up is accompanied by teaching children right. Thus,
schools should be helping parents to achieve their duties to their children.
Which is why, if the children are home, with or without homework, the parents
have to ensure that their children are well-rested, are taught discipline through
caring ways, and still learn from anything they are doing outside school.

Research Methodology
This chapter covers the research design and methodology, including
respondents of the study, research instrument. It also includes the time place
of the study, and data analysis.
Research Design
This study focusses on the perception of grade 11 in Mangaldan National
High School towards the no homework policy The research apply the
descriptive and non-experimental design use in the study.
The Descriptive Research design was employed in this study in pursuing
the main research question, what is the resolution to Perception of Grade 11
Students towards the No Homework policy in Mangaldan National High school.
It concentrated in generating data from respondents by open-ended questions
to describe the difficulties of every students regarding this topic and the
solutions may vary. Additional queries were used to clarify and expand upon
respondent answer. Interviews regarding the perception of Grade 11 Students
towards the No Homework policy in Mangaldan National High school. And the
solutions were conducted until data.
Source of Data
Participants of the study were randomly selected individual who are on
Grade 11 students of Mangaldan National High School where interviewers and
researchers conducted during the month of February. The participants
included in the study were mostly from the Academic Strand Hence, it is up to
them to state their names, gender and address for privacy purposes.
Tools for Data Analysis
Verbatim transcript provided the data for analysis. Major topics of themes
and issues that are related to the research question were identified and discuss
with explanation from the participants. Data were initially analyzed using
narrative descriptions collected from the participants and were based on the
principle of data saturation.
After data analysis, data were broken down into categories of responses in
relation to Perception of Grade 11 Students towards the No Homework Policy.
Data was then interpret supported by literature interview, and associated in
communication between students and researchers. Moreover, in analysis, the
researchers applied ethic and emic description. The participant’s point of view
with the occurrence is classified as emic description based on the “insiders”
point of view. The researcher’s point of view is considered as ethic description.

CHAPTER V
SUMMARY, CONCLUISION AND RECOMMENDATIONS
In this chapter looks at the summary, conclusion, and recommendation
Summary
Homework is defined as the time students spend outside the classroom
in assigned learning activities. Anywhere Schools believes the purpose of
homework should be to practice, reinforce, or apply acquired skills and
knowledge.
The study focused on the Perception of Grade 11 in Mangaldan National
High School towards the No Homework Policy, using phenomenology research
design particularly the naturalistic approach informed consent was obtained
prior to each interview sessions that join the interviews were told that the
participants voluntary and the data collected would be used for academic
purposes only
An interview guide was used in discussion regard the participant about
the Perception of Grade 11 students Towards the No Homework Policy,
interviews were conducted on the month of February 2020.
Conclusion
Based on the data gathered, the following conclusion we formulate. Grade
11 students of Mangaldan National High School don’t want to have a
homework during weekends. And according to the result of the interview, the
responses of the participants is they want to have time with their self, with
their family and with their friends than doing homework in their houses. But it
is clear that no homework policy have a disadvantages like student will have a
lack of knowledge and they will become lazy person. Students must see the
importance of homework because through homework they will have a higher
grade and they will become a productive people.
Recommendation
Based on the result of the study the following are recommended
1. It is recommended for the student to follow the instruction of their teacher
and don’t be lazy.
2. It is recommended for the teacher to know there limit in giving a homework
to the students.
3. It is recommended for the senior high school students to do their homework.
4. It is recommended for the parent to check their children’s performance.
5. It is recommended for the students and teacher to know this kind of policy.
