Structural Mechanics and Materials Lab

The document describes a tension test experiment conducted on a mild steel specimen to determine its material properties including ultimate strength, yield strength, and stress-strain behavior by applying an increasing load and measuring the corresponding elongation. Data was collected from the experiment and calculations were shown to determine values like stress from the load and cross-sectional area. Results for properties like ultimate strength, yield strengths, and percent elongation were presented but their specific values were not included in the summary.

Sample calculation:
For observation no. 2:
Load = 5 KN = 5 x 224.81 = 1124.05 Ib.
Extensometer reading = 48
Elongation = 48 x 0.00005 = 0.0024 inch.
Stress = 𝐿𝑜𝑎𝑑 = 1124.05 = 6210.22 psi .

Discussion:
The results of the experiment shows that the specimen of mild steel is ductile as it undergoes ductile failure ( reduction
of at the fracture point) . The lower yield point is --------. To get accurate result ----------.
