watched, his face being secretly studied for a yes or no. Grace gazed at his face meaningfully.
Mali, if he was at home, kept on coming into his quarters on some excuse or other. After the
first day's demonstration Jagan had studiously avoided all literary topics. 'Here is a scheme
to make me bankrupt, he said to himself whenever he heard footfalls approaching his room.
'Fifty-one thousand dollars! I am not growing over-fond of money, but I am not prepared to
squander it. Why should we want stories or machines for writing them ?

after I went through all that trouble to bring him home, and it is best that I forgot the wretched
dog.

3. 'The speaker in the poem, "Farewell to Barn and Stack and Tree" receives our sympathy rather than
anger'. Do you agree ?
4. Critically analyze with examples how the poem, 'I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings' illustrates the
denial of freedom of the oppressed people.
5. 'The clash of attitudes between the older and the younger generations is beyond time.' Comment on
this statement in reference to the poem, "Father and Son."
6. Discuss how the poet brings out the themes effectively through a humorous situation in the poem,
"Upside-down" by Alexander Kushner. (15 marks)

Drama

7. 'The play, "The Bear" is an explicit exposure of social values Vs human weakness.' Do you agree?
Discuss referring to the play.
8. 'The play "Twilight of a crane" analyzes how man becomes a prey of his own greed in the
commercialized society.' Comment. (15 marks)

Prose

9. 'Humans are always opportunistic with their ulterior motives while nature emerges as selfless and
virtuous.' Comment in relevant to the short story. "The Nightingale and the Rose."
10. Discuss how young Nicholas repeatedly proves that "the older, wiser and better people are not so"
in the short story, 'The Lumber Room'.
11. Comment on how Sangakkara highlights the patriotism and bravery of the Sri Lankan cricket team
in his speech, "The Lahore Attack"?
12. 'The extract, "Wave" depicts a realistic picture of a physical and psychological states of humans on
the verge of an unexpected disaster.' Discuss. (15 marks)

Fiction

13 Do you think irresponsibility and ignorance of Jagan as a father leads to conflict between him and
Mali? Discuss with detailed reference to the fiction, "The Vendor of Sweets."
14. Discuss how Mark Twain criticizes the wasteful and meaningless royal customs of the English
Monarch in his fiction, "The Prince and the Pauper."
15. Explain how the speaker adapts to his new life without Tony in the new environment along with his

Poetry
2. Eagle has been depicted as a unique icon. Students should provide example to show beauty, supremacy
and grandeur of nature through eagle.
3. The speaker's psychological conflict, guilt, remorse and repentance catch the sympathy of readers. It is
also understood that his uncontrollable sudden impulses are a result of his immature young age.
4. The contrast between the free bird and the caged bird / feelings of the caged bird / figurative language
that suggests the misery and anxiety of the caged bird.
5. The title without articles suggests that they can be any father or son. Father stereotypical / conservative
/ narrow minded / not ready to believe his son, son - modern / adventurous / ready to explore the word
but frustrated with reaction of father.
6. Boastful nature of people is criticized. How the man created his own ghost created humour. Figurative
language, mental debate supported by the structure of the poem should be elaborated. (15 marks)
Drama
7 Fidelity, honesty and genuine qualities of people are deteriorated while infidelity, hypocrisy and
pretense have appeared in the society. The students should show how the playwright exploits the
characters and situation to convey this.
8 Change of Yoho from the good world to the evil word after his exposure to money should be illustrated
with suitable examples. (15 marks)

Prose
9 Contrast between the ideal world/nature (the Nightingale) and the human world (the young student and
the professor's daughter) should be built in order to prove the statement.
10 The way, Nicholas outsmarts the aunt should be traced with examples. He repeatedly proves that the
aunt is a dull - witted woman.
11 Their behaviour and attitudes while the attack is going on and after the attack should be discussed with
examples.
12 Physical energy of the speaker to grab both children/ The children's ability of facing the situation / the
speaker's prioritizing roles and forgetting parents / Anton's great mentality to face the disaster with his
wife are some examples. (15 marks)
Fiction
13 Jagan's ignorance, irresponsibility and cowardly qualities / his boastful nature and hypocrisy / his
traditional perspectives on life should be argued.
14 How the noble class wastes money - luxuries / imported food / excessive number of servants /
meaningless ceremonies / meaningless customs and traditions.
15 His adaptation to village boys / his anxieties without Tony and his relationship with parents should be
