Tutorial Chapter 1 - Question

The document contains 7 problems related to fluid mechanics concepts such as viscosity, density, surface tension, and flow behavior. The problems provide specific values and equations to calculate variables like shear stress, relative density, height of a cylindrical tank, and capillary height changes. Fluid properties and concepts like viscosity, density, surface tension, and flow velocity profiles are discussed.

Tutorial 1
Chapter 1

1. From a table of properties of liquids it as found that, at 20 ºC, CCl 4 has a coefficient of
viscosity of 9.67 x 10-4 Pa.s and a kinematic viscosity of 6.08 x 10 -7 m2/s. Calculate its
(i) relative density and (ii) unit weight.

2. A cylindrical tank weighs 75 N when empty. When filled with water the total weight is
1600 N. Determine the height of the tank if the diameter is 50 cm.

3. The mass of the spherical golf ball is 46 g and its mean diameter is 42 mm. Determine
the density and specific gravity of the material used for golf ball.

4. The velocity distribution for the flow of a Newtonian fluid between two Wide, parallel
plates (see Fig. below) is given by the equation

[ ]
y
3V y 2 h u
u= 1−( )
2 h
h

Where V is the mean velocity. The fluid has a viscosity of 0.04 lb.s/ft 2. Here, V = 2
ft/s and h= 0.02 in. determine: (a) the shearing stress acting on the bottom all, and
(b) the shearing stress acting on a plane parallel to the Walls and passing through
the centerline(mid line)

5. Air at 15oC forms a boundary layer near a solid wall. The velocity distribution in the
boundary layer is given by:
V
U ( )
=1−exp −2
y
δ

Where U = 30 m/s and  = 1 cm. Find the shear stress at the wall.
Given, at 15oC: kinematic viscosity,  = 1.46  10-5 m2/s; density,  = 1.22 kg/m3

6. A. 1.9 mm-diameter tube is inserted into an unknown liquid hose density is 960 kg/m 3,
and it is observed that the liquid rise 5 mm in the tube, making a contact angle of
15°. Determine the surface tension of the liquid.

7. The surface tension of mercury and water at 60°C are 0.47 N/m and 0.0662 N/m,
respectively. Which of these two fluids would has a higher capillary-height changes, if
the fluids are in contact with air in a glass tube of radius 0.30 mm? Use θ = 130° for
mercury, and 0° for water; γ = 132.3 kN/m3 for mercury, and 9.650 kN/m3 for water.
