Stresses in Machine Elements: Unit No-Iv

The document contains 5 problems related to bending stresses in machine elements: 1) The first problem calculates the maximum flexural stress and stress at a point in a cantilever beam carrying a uniform distributed load. 2) The second problem determines the total force acting on the top flange of a beam bent about a horizontal axis given the bending moment. 3) The third problem calculates the maximum stress in a round steel bar of given diameter and length due to its own weight when simply supported at the ends. 4) The fourth problem finds the maximum flexural stress developed in a high strength steel band saw running over a pulley of given diameter. 5) The fifth problem determines the

STRESSES IN MACHINE ELEMENTS

1) BENDING STRESSES

Topic:- A) Stresses at top & bottom fibers

Problem 1: A cantilever beam, 60 mm wide by 100 mm high and 2 m long, carries UDL of 3000
N/m over entire span. Compute the magnitude and location of the maximum flexural stress.
Determine the type and magnitude of the stress in a fiber 20 mm from the top of the beam at fixed
end.

Problem 2: A beam of the cross-section bent about a horizontal axis. If the bending moment is

8 kN-m, determine the total force action on the top flange

Problem 3: Calculate the maximum stress in round steel bar 12 mm in diameter and 20 m long due
to its own weigh, when it is simply supported at its ends. Weight of steel - 78,500 N/m

Problem 4 A high strength steel band saw, 20 mm wide by 0.8 mm thick runs over a pulley 600
mm in diameter, what maximum flexural stress is developed? What minimum diameter pulley can
be used without exceeding a flexural stress of 400 MPa ? Take E = 200 GPa.

Problem 5 cast iron pipe of internal diameter 450 mm is 15 mm thick and is supported on a span
of 8 m. Find the maximum bending stress in the pipe when it is full of water. Take specific weight
of cast iron 71600 N/m and that of water 9810 N/m
