Assignment: Assignment On Center of Gravity and Centroid

This document outlines an engineering mechanics assignment on center of gravity, centroid, and center of mass. It includes 9 problems: 1) defining center of gravity, center of mass, and centroid, 2) determining the center of mass of a bent rod and the reactions on its support, 3) locating the centroid of various 2D shapes and areas, and 4) finding the center of mass of assorted 3D objects and assemblies. The assignment is due on a date TBD and covers key concepts for analyzing the mass distribution and supports of structures.

ASSIGNMENT

Assignment Title: Assignment on Center of Gravity and Centroid

Due Date: TBD
Part I: For the question below give concise answers.

1. Differentiate the following terms.

a) Center of Gravity
b) Center of Mass
c) Centeroid (Center of Geometry)

Part II: Carryout the necessary steps in solving the following problems.

1. Determine the distance to the center of mass of the homogeneous rod bent into the shape
shown. If the rod has a mass per unit length of 0.5kg/m, determine the reactions at the fixed
support O.

3
2. The plate is made of steel having a density of 7850kg/m . If the thickness of the plate is 10 mm,
determine the horizontal and vertical components of reaction at the pin A and the tension in cable
BC.

3. Locate the centriod of the shaded area.

2
4. Locate the centroid of the area. Hint: Choose elements of thickness dy and length [(2 - y) - y ].

3
5. The steel plate is 0.3m thick and has a density of 7850kg/m . Determine the location of its center
of mass. Also determine the horizontal and vertical reactions at the pin and the reaction at the
roller support. Hint: The normal force at B is perpendicular to the tangent at B, which is found
from tan θ = dy/dx.
