Grammar (Third Conditional)

General rules
1. All conditional sentences have an if clause (a condition) and a main clause (a result). In general
terms, the main clause says what happens as a result of the if clause being true:
If Bill hadn’t helped us, we would never have finished on time
(condition) (result)

2. We can put either clause first in the sentence. When the if clause is first, it is usually followed by a
comma. When the main clause is first, there is usually no comma:
I would have been able to go to Thailand for holidays if I hadn’t spent all my money on a new car.

If I had had enough money, I could have bought a car.

Third Conditional

We use third conditional to talk about unreal past events or imaginary situations/hypothetical
actions, express regrets and its result in the past.

Examples:

If I had known you were in the hospital, I would have visited you. (In real life, I didn’t know were
in the hospital, so I didn’t visit you)

I would have been happy if I had gotten a gold medal. (In real life, I didn’t get a gold medal, so I
wasn’t happy)
