INTRODUCTION
On-The-Job training is one of the last challenges a college student will
have to face before getting that sweet, sweet diploma. It is also a part of a
college curriculum that aims to train students about the work and their future
career. Let’s face it, no matter how much you ready yourself for your future
career, even with the help of your many cramming nights, “terror” professors, and
groupmates, the nearest thing you have to getting a taste of your future is your
OJT, because it is a type of skill development where a worker learns how to do
work through hands-on experience. On the Job Training is one method by which
students are exposed with different work situation designed to give students an
opportunity to experience and a chance to apply what they have learned from
school. It also helps the students to acquire relevant knowledge and skills by
performing in actual working environment.
OJT is very important not only to teach students regarding their chosen
career but also to awake and show students the reality in working. The students
will be exposed to the actual work related to the course that they are taking and
to learn at the same time. On-the-Job Training helps the trainee to learn more
about his chosen field and practice what he has learned from the school. It helps
in building up the trainee’s perseverance, patience and competence. Of course,
when a student is competent enough, he will be able to do things successfully.
This training develops one’s professionalism in dealing with people. After the
training, the trainee will be able to handle situations properly and he will be able
to know how to socialize well with his associates or co-worker. He will also be
able to work well with everyone and be able to work as a team..
Having a proper On-the-Job Training helps in the preparation of future
professionals for their future jobs. Students will also be trained not only
academically but socially as well. It will also enhace the way they work and
communicate with others.
Page 1
On-the-Job Training requires effort and seriousness. An OJT is either
backbreaking or plain “chill”, but the one thing the student really have to do is to
make the most out of it seriously as it can be a powerful tool for a person in
preparing for the next chapter of life of a professional. It can be a source of
recommendation when they take that big lift from being students to career
professionals someday. And always keep in mind that how we see our OJT, will
be how we will see our future.
Objectives Of On-the-Job Training Program
The program aims to:
1. Provide the students with the opportunity to acquire practical knowledge,
skills and desirable attitudes and values in reputable
establishments/industries.
2. Enhance the students’ work competencies, and discipline as they relate
to people in the workplace.
3. Impress on the students the importance of competitiveness and human
relations in the working place or environment.
4. Provide opportunities to learn from and network with experienced
professionals.
5. Develop and instill a positive attitude, self confidence and self-motivation
required of a responsible professional in handling new challenges and
complex tasks or problems.
6. Identify future career directions and become candidates for future job
opening.
7. Strengthen and enrich the degree programs of the university.

History
Parts of the city were once subject to the pre-Hispanic Kingdom of
Namayan, whose capital is now in the Santa Ana district of Manila. The Spanish
then assigned the area to the town of Santa Ana de Sapa and in the 1600s
began to be developed as a pilgrimage center around the churches of Our Lady
of Guadalupe (now Our Lady of Grace) and of Saints Peter and Paul in what is
today the poblacion, built by missionary friars to attract worshippers, and also as
a farming community. It became an independent municipality in 1670, and was
christened San Pedro de Macanti in honour of the town’s patron, Saint Peter.
The town was also famous for its pottery industry since the 18th century, with
skilled potters trained by Jesuit priests. Its strategic location also made it a
pitstop for pilgrims, travelling by foot or boat, towards the shrine of Our Lady of
Peace and Good Voyage in Antipolo.
In 1851, Don Jose Bonifacio Roxas (an ancestor of the Zobel de Ayala
family) purchased the Jesuit estate of “ Hacienda de San Pedro de Macati” for
52,800 pesos. Since then, the development of Makati has remained linked with
the Zobel de Ayala family and their company, Ayala Corporation.
The town was a cradle of Filipino passive resistance against Spanish
colonial rule in the 1980s and the subsequent Philippine Revolution, with the
participation of the local Katipunan council based in the area with Pio del Pilar,
a local resident from the village of Culi-Culi, as its president. Culi-Culi is now a
barangay named in honour of Del Pilar.

popularly known as the Guadalupe Ruins,
Makati’s oldest church, used as a fortress by Filipinos against the Spaniards in
1896 and against the Americans in 1898.The waves represent the ebbing tide
from which the town got its name as the phrase "Makati na,Kumakati

Department of Engineering and Public Works – this is the department in
the City Government of Makati where I was assigned to conduct my On-the-Job
Training. I was very excited and somewhat nervous because of the new
environment and the new people surrounding me. I did not have any idea of what
kind of people they were and it made me adjust myself with their personalities
and attitude.
My training supervisor accompanied me to my table where I will be staying
during my On-the-Job Training. During that moment, I felt that I was really an
office girl already having my own office chair and table. The first task that my
Page 9
Training Supervisor asked me was to familiarize the nature of works of the
engineers by giving sample data that made me understand it well.
While familiarizing, reviewing, scanning and recording their daily work, I
was able to know different rules and the proper installation of different materials
and to know the hazardous things in a commercialize or even in residential
buildings that gives me a clear picture for what we have learned in our previous
subject which is all about Safety Management.
My first week was really a good start and I was motivated to perform
excellently because of what I have already accomplished and because of my
Supervisors who were very accommodating and kind to me and to my co-trainee.

Week 2
The second week of my On-the-Job Training was another new
experience to me because they gave me another task to do. I was nervous that
time because they also assigned me to receive reports from the engineers to be
signed by the OIC, of Electrical Enforcement. At first I was confused on doing it
that made me think on how will I going to do it and where to begin with it.
And that time, I was just staring at the papers and blueprints attached to
the files in my table. I was also staring to the monitor and then back to the papers
again. Another factor that made me nervous was its number and when the
engineer said that he need his papers as soon as posible. It was too many that
made me think if I can finish the job in a day. My supervisor notice me and she
suddenly laugh out loud and asked me “what with that face?”. At that time, she
told me to just relax while doing those works because that engineer was just
kidding and she also told me that just finish what I can do in that day because I
still have a week to finish those papers. I felt relieve during that time and I was
able to finish half of those papers during the day. I was able to finish the task for
two days only. I was given another task using their database system. My second
week on the training went so far and so good.

On the third week of my training, I continued the update and review of the
files and data of Electrical Inspection using their database system. This was the
time where I was assigned to do the task of Ms. Shie, my other supervisor
because she was not around so I took over her job for a meanwhile, but she
made sure that she taught me well all the things I needed to do before she went
out. I also did the updating of Certificate of Electrical Inspection in a Database
System.
Page 12
They also taught us on sharing and networking, which was really a great
big help for us, as a trainee. Sir Joel also taught us how to detect problems in
networking or to know if the connections in the network are connected or
disconnected using command line.
I can say that it was not just my skills and knowledge that were being
developed but also my personality as a student and as a professional in the
future. It also helped me to develop my communication skills and on how to deal
with professionals like them.

was the Election Day so we did not report to work. On the second day of the
week, I continued to review and file all the inspections report from different
places.
I was able to continue the task assigned to me the previous week. I
recorded all their files using software application that made all the filing and
recording easier.
During that week Sir Joel and Sir Lymark introduced to us the use of
Microsoft Visual Basic. They also shared their knowledge and experience about
their skills and in what they have done during their college life or as a college
student as a computer addict. That was the time when we begin to be
comfortable to hang up with them.

Another week for another set of work to continue. The first thing that I did
was to continue and finish the recording, sorting and filing of inspections of
engineers. After that accomplishment my training supervisor told me to answer
phone calls while she was not around. They also taught me how to assist clients
asking for clearance and permits.
My nervousness hit me again that time because that was the first time I
answered phone calls for business purposes, but thanks God that I was able to
do it up.
It was a great week for me and I was really satisfied with my
accomplishment for this week.Despite the time that I was just sitting on my chair,
in front of my table, and waiting for my boss to ask me to do something, I still
learned to behave and to be alert whenever they call me abruptly.

The tasks that i did this week were just the continuation of the task that I
did on the previous week. I just continue to record and update all the processed
report done during inspectios.
After updating all the files needed to be updated, I started to file and
receive all occupancy clearance for the release of their building permit.
During the sixth week of my training. I started having normal
conversations with the people there. I became more comfortable with those other
training supervisor of my co-trainess compared to the first and second week of
training. I also started to socialize with other people especially those who are on
higher position. I learned to handle some situations and adjust with the
environment where I am conducting my On-the-Job Training. This OJT really
helped me to be more determined, to be more persevere and to be more
competetive in everything as far as I can, and as long as I can do.
Week 7

Monday May-30-16 Prepared all papers for the 8
completion of the training in the
agency.
Page 16
Total no. of Hours 8
First day of the week in our week seven, was also our last day for the
training. It was also our last day to complete the number of hours of our OJT due
to the election happen in the second week of May.
It was also the day when Ms. Violeta F. Reyes the CBO Administrative
Officer also known as “Mamu” allowed as to prepare all the papers we need to do
for the completion of our training. She also helped us to get all the papers we
need. We thanked her for every good thing she did for us.
I was happy because I will finally finish my training but somehow sad
because I will be leaving the office where I had lots of memories and I will be
missing the people that became close to me for a period of time, but despite of
that I was happy that once in my life, I have met people like them who taught me
things related to my course and helped and molded me to be the best I can.
The Awarding Ceremony or should I say “Picture Taking Ceremony” was
really fun, because I never thought that we teenagers only can take the pictures
without the so called “camera shy”, but they proved that age really did not matter.
All in all, my OJT experience in the City Governent of Makati especially in
the Department of Engineering and Public Works was really great and fun.
Page 17
Learnings
The training I had in City Government of Makati at the Department of
Engineering and Public Works was full of learnings each day. For some students,
on-the-job training gives them a taste of real world-a glimpse of what lies ahead
after they graduate.
I learned new experiences, from a few tricks of the trade and bittersweet
lessons, to the life principles we can live by. One of the most important things is
that talent alone is not enough. It is important, but it is no guarantee of success.
We must also be a hardworking and should practice self-discipline. Sacrifice is
also one factor that is important too.
I also learned through experience how to interact and communicate with
people. Knowing how to handle and tackle different issues and still be diplomatic
in both actions and words are important.
Sacrifice is also one of the factors that can make you stronger and a proof
that you can stand alone and see things that can bring you to your best. Start
with what you know, and remove the unknown. Simply put, begin at the
beginning and then work on how to solve the problems one at a time.
The whole month of my training means a lot to me, because it was the one
that taught me how to do and show my best. I think studying is harder than
working, though the real world is easier than college. So all we can do as a
Page 18
student is to learn whatever we can in school, be inspired, love the path we take,
and finally, always do our best in everything we do, with positive outlook in mind.
Conclusion
At the end of the On-the-Job Training period, we experienced many things
and learned from it. We gained knowledge about the work in the field of
engineering. We learned how to work with the other engineers with their own
professionalism. They taught us how to work as a team. We learned how
inspections happens, their strategies on how to conduct inspection, and on how
to please and accommodate clients as a public servants. It is very important to
learn these things because these are essential for us to know about this kind of
work.
Throughout the training, we also experienced dealing with different kind of
people around us, with the clients, department head and most especially with our
co-workers. It is important to a group of workers to have camaraderie so that they
can work well to attain and achieve their goal.
Through this OJT, I saw the difference when we are in school and in the
real world. Most of the time we just learn theoretically in school while in real
world, we actually experience and apply what they taught to us.
OJT is an oversimplification to think of “learning by doing” as in some way
opposed to “learning by listening and talking.”
