Inscribed Angles Lesson Plan

The document contains a detailed lesson plan for a 10th grade math class on inscribed angles. The objectives are to demonstrate understanding of key concepts of circles and coordinate geometry, and to prove theorems related to chords, arcs, central angles, and inscribed angles. The content will focus on inscribed angles. Examples and proofs will be presented for theorems such as: the measure of an inscribed angle is half the measure of its intercepted arc; an angle inscribed in a semicircle is a right angle; and opposite angles of a cyclic quadrilateral are supplementary. Students will practice applying the theorems to solve problems involving inscribed angles.

A. Reviewing Previous Last time we talked about central angles of a circle. Can someone tell us about central angles?

activity Last time we constructed angles based on the following conditions under the pre-activity. Let us
do the same thing for this lesson.

on the circle.

Performing the following conditions, construction C and D provide angles whose three points
are found on the circle. Such angles whose vertex lies on the circle and the sides are cords of
the circle are called inscribed angles.
So this is how the angle looks like.
Basing from the construction that we just had
What can you say about their angles?
Very good. Therefore, we can say that
Thus, LDEF is an inscribed angle of 0 C.
How about in construction D, what is the
inscribed angle of 0 C?
Very good. It is LDEF.
B. Establishing the Share the goals or the learning objectives of the lesson and their expected output.
Purpose of the Lesson
At the end of the lesson, students should be able to:
 Find the measure of an inscribed angle
 Solve problems involving an inscribed angle drawn in a semicircle in problems including
equations
We will be having our summative test on Angles and their Intercepted arcs.
Let’s have a couple of some vocabulary.
Cord- is a segment that fits perfectly inside the circle. The two endpoints are on the circle.

C. Presenting Examples/
Instances of the New
Lesson

The construction above shows two of the three possible cases for an inscribed angle. The cases
are in response to the position of center of the circle in relation to the sides of the angle. The
center of the circle may either be on one side of the angle; in the interior of the inscribed angle;
or on the exterior of the inscribed angle.

So, these are the three cases.

Now, can you consider this angle as an inscribed angle?
Some say yes, some say no. This is not considered an inscribed angle
D. Discussing New Because it’s vertex is not on the circle. Going back on our previous
Concepts and discussion, this a central angle because it’s vertex is on the center of the
Practicing New Skills circle.

We have learned that the measurement of the intercepted arc is equal to its central angle.
Keeping that in mind, the inscribed angle theorem states that “the measure of an inscribed
angle is one-half the measure of its intercepted arc.

The measure of an inscribed angle lies in its relation to its intercepted arc. This can be stated
clearly as a theorem.
To prove the theorem, we have to consider various techniques since the theorem works in three
different cases. Let us consider proving the first case.
(Turn your learning packet on the 7th page). Discuss the proof.
Let’s check on this example:

The inscribed angle measures 900, what is the measure of its

intercepted arc?
a0=1800 according to inscribed angle theorem.

What if we encounter two or more inscribed angles sharing the same intercepted arc?
Let us look in this theorem.
Semicircle Theorem
An angle inscribed in a semicircle is a right angle.
An angle Subtended by the Same Arc Theorem
-This states that, two or more angles subtended by the same arc are congruent.
Go the 9th page discuss to them the proof for the theorem.
Let us consider these theorems to solve the following items. This allows better a better
understanding and a clear grasp of the lesson.

1. AC is a diameter of the circle, what is mLADC?

 Since AC is a diameter of the circle, then LADC is inscribed in
a semicircle. By the semicircle theorem, an angle inscribed in a
semicircle is a right angle. Thus, mLADC = 90

2. If mArcAB = 88, what is mLBCA?

 Apply the Inscribed Angle Theorem where the measure of an inscribed
angle is one-half the measure of its intercepted arc. Therefore,

1
mLBCA= (mArcAB)
2
1
mLBCA= (88) =44
2
3. If mLBCA = 5x + 3 and mLDA=6x-5 find mArcAB

mLBCA = mLBDA
5x + 3 = 6x -5
x=8
Then, mLBCA = 5x + 3 = 5(8) + 3 = 43
mLBDA = 6x-5 = 6(8)- 5 =43
 Since both angles are subtended to AB, then, by the Inscribed Angle Theorem where the
measure of an inscribed angle is one-half the measure of its intercepted arc, we arrive at:
mLBCA = ½(mArcAB)
43= ½(mArcAB)
mArcAB= 2(43) = 86

There are more examples presented there so have time to study them.

Notice that when inscribed angles are joined together, they form closed figures. These figures
whose vertices lie on the circle are called inscribed polygons. One of the possible inscribed
polygons is presented in the semicircle theorem. Another inscribed polygon that we need to
discuss is about inscribed quadrilaterals.

Cyclic Quadrilateral Theorem

 States that opposite angles of cyclic quadrilaterals are supplementary. Meaning, the sum
of their angles is 1800.

Let us check this example.

∎MLQR is inscribed in circle 0. Find mLM and mLQ provided that mLM = 4x and mLQ = 6x+10.
Since LM and LQ are opposite angles of the cyclic quadrilateral, then they are supplementary.
mLM + mLQ = 180
4x + (6x + 10) = 180
x= 17
Then, mLM = 4x = 4(17) = 68
mLQ = 6x + 10 = 6(17) + 10 = 112
