• The assignment should be presented with a cover page (including your assignment word
count), authorship statement, table of contents, body of assignment, reference page
and bibliography.
This is an Integrated Child Development Study:
- You must work collaboratively in the undertaking of the project.
- It is important to demonstrate colleague and parental involvement.
- It is vital that you examine all aspects (PILES – physical, intellectual/cognitive,
language, emotional and social) of the chosen child’s learning and development over
an extended period of time.
- To ensure non-bias the Target Child should not be a relation.
- Ensure to follow ethical guidelines to protect identity of child, childcare setting and
anybody else involved.
- Gain parental consent before observations.

(1) Introduction and Aims (600 words).
• Provide a brief introduction to your assignment, your aims and your learning goals.
(2) Project Planning Section (700 words):
• The Collaborative Team – Parents, children, staff, management etc.
• Background to the Child – Family type, siblings, place in family, health issues, interests etc.
• Projected Outcomes – What you hope to achieve from carrying out this child study.
• Time Frames and Scheduling – Timetable of when you plan to carry out the observations,
the type of observation you are using, the area of development you are observing and why.
(3) Description of Child Development and Learning Concepts being observed section. Use
secondary sources to corroborate writings. Ensure that writings are ethically sound.
Describe the normative stage of child development for the age of the child that you are
observing in relation to:

(4) Recorded Observations x10 Section:
(A minimum of 4 observation methods must be used in this section. It is important within
your writings that learners use ‘cautious language’ in discussing any element of the child,
the observation, analysis etc. Examples: it may be said, it could indicate, the child’s
behaviour may indicate…)
• Background to Observation Methods – An observation cover sheet must be completed for
each observation done.
• Inclusion of 10 clearly recorded observations – All observations completed in full.
• Inclusion of observation context, analysis, conclusion and recommendations for each of
the observations.
(1) Observation context – the setting/environment, the child’s mood, health or anything
else that may be relevant on the time/day that you observe the child.
(2) Analysis – investigate what you have learned from the observations in relation to the
child’s development.
(3) Conclusion – what can you conclude from your analysis?
(4) Recommendations – what would you recommend in relation to the child’s development
and the curriculum?
(5) Integrated Description of Child – Evaluation of Developmental needs and interests (1000
words).
• From all of the observations that you have carried out, evaluate the child’s needs and
interests in relation to the various areas of development.
(6) Clear and Appropriate Recommendations – in relation to the child’s development and the
curriculum. Referencing Aistear throughout to show a detailed understanding. (1000
words)

(7) Critical Reflective Practice (1250 words):
- Within the Early Years Environment – why is it important to conduct observations in the
early year environment?
- Individual personal and professional learning - What have you learnt both personally and
professionally from carrying out this study.
- Observation and Techniques Used – Reflect on the positives and negatives of each type of
observation method you used. Did they work for you? Would a different type of method
have worked better for the area you were observing?
Theory and Practice – Reflect and link theories/theorists to your study

(8) Effective Collaborative Practice (1250 words):
• Discuss the importance of observations within the childcare setting and how this helps those
involved. (Parents, child, childcare workers etc.).
• Consider the importance of the childcare setting being sensitive to parents on discussing the
outcomes of observations with parents.
• Reflect on the childcare settings policies and procedures in relation to carrying out
observations and how they share information with other organisations such as the HSE,
doctors, therapists etc.
(9) Conclusion (600 words).
