HUMAN IMPACT ON THE ENVIRONMENT

Name: __________________________________ Section: _________________________

Most Essential Learning Competency
Suggest ways to minimize human impact on the environment
(MELC S8LT-IVj-25)

Learning Objectives:
1. Identify human activities that contributed to environmental changes;
2. Analyze the cause and effect of different human activities;
3. Suggest ways on how to minimize the human impact on the environment and
analyze the best solutions to minimize environmental damages in the future.

Time Allotment: 2 hours

Key Concepts
➢ An environment is a combination of all
the physical, chemical and biological
factors acting upon an organism or an
ecological community. The interaction of
these factors determines the form and
survival of living things and of the

➢ Human activities have cause serious

environmental problems, polluting
natural resources and disrupting
environment. Deforestation, urbanization,
and agricultural practices are some of the
ways in which humans have greatly
changed the earth, affecting the
environment.

destroys habitats and alters ecosystems. It can produce a net increase in the
global atmospheric concentration of carbon dioxide, an important greenhouse
gas. Increased carbon dioxide levels can
affect climate by contributing to higher
temperature at Earth’s surface.
➢ Mining is a process of extracting useful
materials from the earth. Some examples
of substances that are mined include,
coal, gold, or iron ore. The mining process
can also harm the environment in some
other ways. It creates a type of water

pollution known as acid mine drainage. /Article_Images/ImageForArticle_18547(1).jpg

➢ Air, soil and water pollution are among the negative effects of urbanization.
The development of natural lands to build towns and roads also causes
habitat loss, degradation, posing a grave threat to ecosystems in general, and
wildlife in particular.
➢ Agriculture has both positive and negative impact on the environment. These
are farming practices that affect the environment.
➢ Monoculture farming is a form of
agriculture that is based on growing only
one type of crop at one time on a specific
field. It maximizes the efficient use of soil
and local climate conditions and select
the crop that will thrive best in the local
environment. Farmers who stick to
monoculture farming face more
difficulties in terms of struggling with Source:https://heliusenergy.com/wp-

pest infestations on their field. Monoculture.jpg
➢ Pesticide is any substance or a mixture of substances intended for preventing,
destroying, repelling or mitigating any pest. It will continue to be part of
human life and the environment in order to increase crop production.
➢ Herbicides are broad class of pesticides that are used to remove nuisance
plants, such as grasses and weeds that may compromise the growth and yield
of desired crops.

➢ Fertilizers are used by farmers and their
families to help crops and gardens grow. A
wide range of fertilizers has been developed
to help different crops grow in different soil
and weather conditions. Commercial and
consumer fertilizers are strictly regulated to
ensure that they are safe for the people who
use them. Source:https://encrypted-

Activity 3: Carbon Handprint
Objective: Suggest ways on how to minimize the human impact on the environment
and analyze the best solutions to minimize environmental damages in
____ _the future.
What you need: paper, ballpen, alugbati seed/coffee powder as source of organic
paint/coloring, markers, art material, bond paper (short), paint
___brush
What to do:
1. Extract juice from alugbati fruits. If alugbati is not readily available, you
may use a coffee solution by mixing 1/2 teaspoon amount of water to 1
teaspoon of coffee powder.
2. Put an ample amount of the extracted juice from the alugbati fruits or
from the coffee solution evenly at the bottom of your left palm and create
a handprint on the paper by stamping your palm at the middle of the
paper.
3. Answer the guide questions below and write it on the same paper where
your handprint is placed.
4. Consider the rubric in completing the activity.

Carbon Handprint represents the accumulation of massive amount of carbon

dioxide or other form of greenhouse gases resulted from human activities. This
significantly causes damages to the environment. Its continuous emission everyday
will give you an idea on the size of the impact that it can cause in our environment.

Guide Questions:
1. What does the handprint represents? Write it at the center of your
handprint.
2. What do you think contributes to the size of the handprint? Write your
answers in each fingerprint.
3. As a student, what do you think is/are the best solution/s that you can do
to make your carbon handprint smaller? Write your answer in the outer side
of your handprint.
