LP IN SCIENCE 5 (Effects of Soil Erosion)

The lesson plan aims to teach students about soil erosion, its effects, and ways to control it. The lesson contains objectives, references, and a detailed procedure divided into preliminary activities, learning activities, and ways to evaluate students. Some key points are identifying the effects of soil erosion, investigating local soil erosion, watching a video to observe effects, and learning methods to control erosion like natural vegetation, strip cropping, terracing, crop rotation, and riprapping.

LESSON PLAN IN SCIENCE 5

I. OBJECTIVES
At the end of the lesson, the students should be able to
a) Identify the effects of and ways to control soil erosion
b) Explain the effects of soil erosion on living things and the environment.
c) Investigate extent of soil erosion in the and its effect.

II. CONTENT
A. Topic: Effects of soil erosion and ways to control soil erosion

B. References:
1. Curriculum Guide:
2. Teacher’s Guide:
3. Learner’s Material: __________
4. Textbook: _________
5. Additional resources from LR portal: _____________

C. Other Learning Resources:

PowerPoint presentation, pictures, video clips

III. PROCEDURE

TEACHER’S ACTIVITY PUPIL’S ACTIVITY

A. Preliminary Activities

1. Prayer

Settle down class so we can start.

Are you ready to pray?
Okay let us pray Yes sir

2. Greetings

Good morning students. Good morning, sir Vin. Good Morning

Classmates.

3. Checking of attendance

Is there any absent on this class today? None, sir.

Excellent
4. Setting of Classroom Rules

Before we start our lesson, let us first recall our

classroom rules. But since this is our time to
meet. You must remember our classroom rules
from now on is that okay? Yes, sir.

Rule number 1 is t be active and participative.

Rule number 2 is to respect your teacher and
your co students.
And lastly is to raise your hand when you want
to ask something or say something.

Do you understand? Yes, sir.

5. Review or Recap

Okay now let us have a quiz review about

your previous discussion on Weathering and
Soil Erosion.
What is Weathering Again? Weathering is the breaking down of rocks on
the earth’s surface.

And what are the agents of weathering? This can be cause by water, wind, ice, plants
and temperature.

How about Soil erosion?

Soil erosion is the gradual process hat occurs
when the impact of water and wind removes
the soil particles on the earth’s surface.

Great job, class! It seems like you are able to

retain the information from your previous
lesson.

B. Learning Activities

1. Engage
Now, we will be having a game that will
give you and insight of what will be our
lesson for today. I will show you series
of pictures and you tell me the word
that will first come up to your mind after
seeing the picture.
Do you understand? Yes, sir.
Okay let’s start.
1.

LANDSLIDE

2.

DEFORESTATION

3.

CLIMATE CHANGE

4.

FLOOD

5.

AGRICULTURAL LOSS

That’s it! Congratulations for those who got

their correct answers.

C. Explore

Motif question: What do you think will happen

when suddenly Soil erosion happened?
What is its effect to us and to the environment?

Now, we will have a group activity. I’ll let you

watch a video and observe carefully what
happens

(Play video)

D. Explain
After the group activity, let the students share
their answers to the class. (One member from
each group is required to share what they have
just discovered)

Now basing from that video, you have watched.

Who can give me the effects of soil erosion to us
and in the community? Soil erosion can cause water pollution

Correct, any more answers?

Very Good! Destruction of Infrastructures and Threat to

aquatic system.
E. Elaborate

Now did you know that every natural process

that happens here in earth like Soil erosion
affects both living and non-living things.

Soil erosion doesn’t only shape earth landforms

but it will also affect our ecosystem especially if
it happens abruptly.

Human activities such like deforestation, illegal

logging, overgrazing, over cropping and
quarrying can increase the effects of soil
erosion.
Effects of Soil Erosion
1. Loss of Arable Land
2. Water Pollution and Clogging
Waterways
3. Sedimentation and Threat to Aquatic
Systems
4. Air Pollution
5. Destruction of Infrastructure
6. Desertification

Loss of Arable Land

Lands used for crop production have been
substantially affected by the soil erosion by
means of washing away the top soil of the land
that is very fertile where the crops planted get
their nutrients.

Now, what do you think will happen if there The plants will not be able to grow properly
would be no fertile soil where we can plant and we will harvest less crops.
crops?

Water Pollution and Clogging Waterways

Soils eroded from the agricultural lands
carry pesticides, heavy metals and fertilizers
which are washed into streams and major
bodies of water. This leads to water pollution
causing damage to marine animals

Now, do you think fishes will be able to survive No, sir!

this kind of problem?

Eroded soils maybe stuck into waterways and

pipes. This will cause the water to be stagnant
and may give flood when there is rain.

Sedimentation and Threat to Aquatic Sytems

Sediments washed away may cause disturbance
to aquatic life causing loss of habitat. Sediments
may also enter the fish gills affecting their
respiratory functions.

Observe the fish, what do you think is happening The fish is breathing heavily. This maybe cause
and why is it happening? of the sediments being inhaled or ingested
causing them to breathe hard.

Air Pollution
Wind erosion picks up dust particles of the soil
and throws them up in the air, causing air
pollution. Some of it may contain harmful
elements.

Destruction of Infrastructures
Dams, and drainages can accumulate the
sediments from soil erosion making the
infrastructures weak and loss operation
efficiency causing worst events like flashfloods.

Desertification
Process wherein the land loses its soil and plants
and unable to support life.

What natural event do you think can cause

desertification? LANDSLIDE!

“Before we move on, can you give me the

different effects again of Soil erosion?” One is?...
And?... 1. Loss of Arable Land
2. Water Pollution and Clogging
Waterways
3. Sedimentation and Threat to Aquatic
Systems
4. Air Pollution
5. Destruction of Infrastructure
Very well! 6. Desertification

Now let’s move on to the Ways on how we can

control Soil Erosion.

Now do you believe in the saying that

“Prevention is better than cure?
Yes, Sir!
Ok, Good! Because I know soil erosion is scary
and dangerous but there are also ways on how
we can control and prevent it happening.

Ways to control Soil Erosion

1. Natural Vegetation
2. Strip Cropping
3. Terracing
4. Crop Rotation
5. Riprapping
Natural Vegetation
Simply letting the trees grow without human
interference (DON’T CUT TREES) this will make
the roots of the tree to grip on the soil more
stable.

Strip Cropping
This is done by planting different crops
alternately in strips. The strip crops lessen soils
erosion since they hold much water in the soil.

Terracing
Involves planting or terraces or steps built in the
slope of mountainside to act as a ridge to help
slowdown the flow of water that carries soil. By
doing so, the rate of erosion also slows down.

Have you seen a Terrace Before?

Crop Rotation Yes, Sir. Example of which is the Banaue Rice

This method maintains the good quality of the Terraces found in the Mountains.
soil. It refers to the planting of crops on different
spot each year. Doing crop rotation makes the
soil moist and moist soil is not carried easily by
the winds.

Riprapping
Building chunks of rocks or stone arranged on
the edge of a slope. This serves a s a foundation
and a ridge to control soil erosion. When it rains
ripraps traps the soil carried by the water.

(RECAP AND REVIEW)

“What are the ways again on how we can

control soil erosion?”
1. Natural Vegetation
2. Strip Cropping
3. Terracing
4. Crop Rotation
F. Evaluation 5. Riprapping
For you to be able to retain what have
you learned. We’ll have a short quiz.
You choose your answers on the
multiple choice.

Is that Clear?
