Preliminary design calculation of turbine for Tara Khola, Baglung
A. Measured parameters of the project:
1. Gross Head: 114.6 m
2. Measured flow: 544 lps (combined tara khola and mophes khola), date: Feb 8, 2013
B. Site Data:
1. Intake Elevation: 2228m
C. Calculation of design flow:
3. With MIP method, from the hydrology sheet it is found Minimum flow 280 lps and flow
for 80% exedance probability is 650 lps at headworks.
Then with 10% release anf 5% conduct loss
Design flow= (650-280*10%)*95% which comes out to be 590 lps
So Qd= 590 lps
D. Power house elevation
Intake elevation – gross head – head loss in canal (assumed 10m)
= 2228 – 114.6 – 10
= 2100 meters
E. Water temperature at power house site
Assumed: min. 5 degree C, max. 30 degree C
Average: 18 Degree C (used in design)
F. Selection and preliminary Design of turbine
Standards followed: IS 12800 (Part 1), IS 12800 (Part 3), IS 12837
1. Specific speed calculation
From IS 12800 (Part 1)
Specific speed ns= n *sq. root (P*1.358)/(Hn^(5/4))
Where n = turbine rpm, P= mechanical power in kW, Hn= net head in meters
So we assumed turbine rpm 1500 (as high head seemed)
Number of units assumed = 2
And, with turbine efficiency assumed 85% and penstock loss 5%, then
Mechanical power of each turbine will be 268 kW
Then,
ns= 1500*sq. root(268*1.358)/(109^(5/4))
ns= 81
As per IS 12837
Francis turbine specific speed range with the above formula is
60 to 400
Hence as 60<81<400, Francis might be adopted as per specific speed
calculation
2. Turbine setting
As per IS 12800 (Part 1)
Suction head Hs< = Hb – σ*Hn-Hv
Where Hb= barometric pressure at power house in m
σ= Thoma coefficient in given specific speed of turbine
Hv= vapor pressure at given temperature (for our case at 18 degree C)
For our case
Hb= 8m (from pressure relation)
From IS 12800 part 1, fig: 3A
Thoma coefficient σ for specific speed 81 is 0.036
Vapor pressure at 18 degree C is 0.21 m , so Hv= 0.21
Then suction head
Hs<= 8 m – 0.036*109 m – 0.21 m = 3.866 meters
Say Hs = 3.5 meters
3. Runner
From IS 12800 Part 1, page 3
Peripheral velocity coefficient Ku is given by formula
Ku= (π* D * N)/(60 * sq. root(2*g*Hn))
Where, D = discharge diameter, m
N= turbine revolution, rmp
Hn= net head
From fig 6 of IS 12800 Part 1 with relation of peripheral velocity coefficient Ku
and Specific speed ns,
It can be found Ku = 0.43 for ns = 81
Then,
D = (0.43* 60 sq. root (2 * 9.81 * 109 ))/(3.41 * 1500) = 0.2532 m
Say D = 253 mm
4. Summary of calculation
Designed flow of plant; 590 lps
Specific speed of turbine (with 2 units proposed) : 81
Calculated specific speed lies on the permissible range of francis turbine
Turbine setting above tailrace: 3.5 meters
Runner discharge diameter: 253 mm
