Good morning today I am going to talk global issue, which is social


disparity and poverty. This text also links with first field of inquiry which is
culture, identity and community and SDGs . The text I am going to talk
about is a graphic novel / memoir called Persepolis by Marjane Satrapi.
In this memoir it portrays Satrapi’s childhood, where young growing up
during the revolution of Iran and experiencing difficulties during the
Islamic revolution.

I am taking chapter 5 ‘The letter’ from the text Persepolis (page – 33). In
this chapter in 8 panel (page – 33). Marjane had a different mind after
reading a novel, which was about how young age doing labour because
they were lower class. After learning about this, Marjane seeks to for
social equilibrium, you tell by looking at Marjane serious facial
expression. Next panel were Marjane realises that how common this
issue is.
In page – 34, 2nd panel, by authorial choice Satrapi shows social
disparity through the height of both families, were Mehri’s parents is
smaller then Marjane’s parents, means Mehri is from low class family
were Marjane is from higher class. This represents the hierarchical
nature of Iranian society. In this panel Marjane parents hiring Mehri as
maid in very young age because of poverty. This same thing was
mentioned in the beginning of the chapter about child labour.

In page – 35 5th and 6th panel is talking about how poverty is affecting
education. Mehri requests Marjane to read and write letter for her, this is
because Mehri was illiterate, this indicates lack of education because of
they were poor.
