Some Possible Questions from unit IV & V

1. Design a 9-speed gear box with the maximum speed of 1800 rpm and the minimum speed of 180 rpm.
Draw the ray diagram and kinematic arrangement. Also calculate the number of teeth.
2. A gear box is to be designed to provide 12 output speeds ranging from 160 to 2000 rpm. The input speed of
motor is 160 rpm. Choose standard step ratio and construct the speed diagram and kinematic arrangement.
3. Design a gear drive to give 18 speeds for a spindle of a milling machine. The drive is from an electric
motor of 3.75 kW at 1440 rpm. Maximum and minimum speeds of the spindle are to be around 650 and
35 rpm respectively.
4. The spindle of a pillar drill is to run at 12 different speeds in the range of 100 rpm and 355 rpm. Design a three-
stage gear box with a standard step ratio. Sketch the layout of the gear box, indicating the number of teeth on
each gear. The gear box receives 5kW from an electric motor running at 360 rpm. Sketch also the speed diagram.
5. Sketch the speed diagram, the kinematic layout and also find number of teeth on each gear for an 18-
speed gear box of the following data: Motor speed is 1440 rpm; Minimum output speed is 16 rpm;
Maximum output speed is 800 rpm; Arrangement = 2*3*3.
6. A 100 mm diameter full journal bearing supports a radial load of 5000 N. The bearing is 100 mm long
and the shaft operates at 400 rpm. Assume permissible minimum film thickness of 0.025 mm and
diametrical clearance of 0.152 mm. Using Raimondi and Boyd curves determine (a) viscosity of a suitable
oil, (b) co-efficient of friction (c) heat generated (d) amount of oil pumped through the bearing, (e)
amount of end leakage (amount of oil to be supplied to the bearing.
7. A roller bearing is to be selected to withstand a load of 4000 N and have an L10 life of 1200 hours at a
speed of speed of 600 rpm. (i) what is the basic dynamic load rating of the bearing is to be selected? (ii)
If the reliability requirement is 99%, what load rating would be used? Take b = 1.17.
8. A ball bearing is to be used for a shaft whose speed is 400 rpm. The radial load on the bearing is 4000N
and the axial load is also 4000N. The bearing is to have a life of 10000 hours at a reliability of 95%.
Determine the dynamic capacity of the bearings. Take b=1.34. Also assume Fa/Co=0.5.
9. Design a journal bearing for a centrifugal pump with the following data: Diameter of the journal -150mm
Load on bearing - 40 kN
Speed of journal - 900 rpm.
10. Select a single row deep groove ball bearing for a radial load of 4000N and an axial load of 5000N,
operating at a speed of 1600 r.p.m for an average life of 5 years at 10 hours per day. Assume uniform
and steady load.
