STATEMENT OF PURPOSE

INTERNATIONAL COLLEGE OF MANAGEMENT SYDNEY

COURSE (GRADUATE OF BUSINESS HOSPITALITY AND MANAGEMENT) AND

MASTERS IN TOURISM AND HOSPITALITY

INTRODUCTION

My Name is Pankaj Paudel son of Mr Ram Kumar Chundali and Mrs Rama Chundali , a
Nepalese citizen. I am permanent resident of Gulariya Municipality ward no 6, Bardiya District.
There are five members in my family including my father, mother two elder sisters and me. My
parents are very supportive and cooperative toward my decision of studying in Australia. I would
like to continue my further education in hospitality sector from Blue mountain international hotel
management school.

ACADEMIC BACKGROUND

I look myself a hardworking student since my school who is career oriented and is focus towards
my future. Looking through my academic achievements I have completed my school leaving
certificate (SLC) from sunrise secondary boarding school with 78% in 2009,After that I joined
science Stream in 2010 because , in Nepalese society, it is prestigious to study Science faculty.
Also, because my parents always wanted me to study science given that I had always been a
bright student; therefore, for the sake of my family and their happiness, I started studying the
same. However, as the time passed by, I realized it was not my cup of tea as I consistently
performed poorly. Honestly speaking, my heart was confused and, as a consequence, I decided to
face the reality: it is not what I really wanted to do and I had to explain it to my parents instead
of running away from the situation as it would only make things worse. I did talk to them.
Although they were disappointed at the beginning, they were happy in the end as I overheard my
father saying to mum I had the guts to tell the truth. I then switched to Management. So I started
it over the next year, that is, in 2011. I continued my education in Nobel academy located in New
Baneshwor, Kathmandu for my Higher secondary education for two years and completed my
study in management stream with 53.40 percentage, and I got my certificate in 28 September
2012. After my higher education I chose to study my Bachelor’s degree in hospitality
management since I realized that I had to work in hospitality industry which is one of the
blooming sectors all over the world with lot of scope. Then, I decided to study in Silver
mountain school of hotel management in 2012 which is one of the leading colleges in this sector
in Nepal which is affiliated to Queen Margot University Edinburgh, UK that provides dual
degree higher diploma in hospitality management and international hospitality and tourism
management. I studied higher diploma from 2012 to 2015 and Bachelor’s in international
hospitality and tourism from 2015 to 2016. After that I reappeared my three subjects which is
Exploring strategy, Business Research Method and Sustainable Management in 2017. In the
mean time I also started working because it would take some time for my certificates to be issued
by the Board. I, finally, received my certificate on 22 June 2018.

EXPERIENCE AND GAP EXPLANATION

Throughout my higher diploma program, I was offered with an opportunity to be an industrial

trainee in renowned five star hotel named Soaltee Crown plaza of Nepal. Internship in hospitality
industry was far different than studying in college. From which I see the real picture of
hospitality industry where it is not just about providing services .In fact, it was more about
making experience to the guest so they are willing to come back again. I also feel privileged to
be part of team making 18th SAARC summit (an International Games participated by Eight
different South Asian nations) successfully held in Nov 25-28 2014 and I was awarded with
certificate of appreciation by the Hotel. After successfully completing my six months industrial
training I wrote a report on it.

During 6th semester , of my college I again got a chance to work in Hotel Kalptaru which is three
star property situated in Nepalgunj in the position of front office assistant from 1st April 2016 till
September 2016 as a part of my second industrial training and job placement. At that time
period, I gained experience about front office which is the one of the important departments in
hotel industry from which I learnt how to interact with guests and handling complains related to
rooms and other areas; I also knew about software handling for guest reservation and check-in
check- out of guests, and the most important thing I learnt was communication skills, which is
very helpful for my further education and future job. After that I completed my Bachelor’s level
in International hospitality and Tourism Management in the year 2016. After completion of my
Bachelor’s degree, I started working in White Pearl Hotel, which is situated in one of the
beautiful cities of Nepal and the tourist place of Nepal on 10th of November 2016 till now. I got
more opportunity to work there as the place being one of the tourist hub where many tourists
came from different parts of world, and I got chance to interact with them and gain my
confidence for future education and job. After that I took my PTE examinations on 17 Feb. 2020
to meet my entry requirements of University to study Masters in hospitality management and I
scored overall 54 (L-58,R-56,S-58,W-52)

WHY NOT FURTHER STUDY IN NEPAL

After completion of my Bachelor’s degree from a reputed university around the world Queen
Margret university UK, and I got degrees from that university worth priceless as it offers such an
advanced subjects like Contemporary food and drink, Business research method and exploring
strategy and so on which wouldn’t be offered in Nepal hospitality university in recent times. In
Nepal hospitality education is just blooming now days so there are not much more universities in
Nepal. As there are some few colleges like( https://www.linkedin.com/company/nepal-academy-
of-tourism-hotel-management) (NATHM)( https://www.collegenp.com/college/nepal-college-of-
travel-and-tourism-management-ncttm-kathmandu/) (NCTTM) which provide masters degree
but the quality of education in general is not satisfactory. Those college focus more in theoretical
then practical. Beside that I did not see much more option in Nepal to pursue further studies
which combines both hospitality and tourism management. So that I want to continue my further
study from good hospitality university of Australia which helps me to develop myself in
hospitality background all over the world. With an international degree in Australia I believe, I
will get better qualification, International exposure and good quality academic and practical
experience in renowned hotel industry. I am sure after getting an international degree, I can do
much more things in my native land as it is not developed in hospitality as our country- Nepal is
country with a lot more unexplored tourism potentiality, but it is lagging behind in development
due to lack of education in this industry. I am a dreamer, so I choose to stay positive that the
things will accelerate before long!

WHY NOT OTHER COUNTRIES

For me it had become very tough to choose a country for my further education. After that I
started research regarding popular destinations for abroad studies from various web sites
like(https://www.studyinaustralia.gov.au/) But , when I first researched I found countries like
USA,CANADA,NEWZELAND UK and Australia as well. However, after some analysis about
the course in different other countries ,I felt Australia is the best option for my higher education
in Hospitality Management. Since there are abundant options comparatively, which provides
quality education. However, the tuition fees and living expenses in USA or UK are
comparatively higher than Australia. In addition the crime rates in those countries are also higher
which made my family wary and insisted me to choose Australia. Regarding Canada the
temperature the temperatures there go under 30 degrees which is harsh to live there and after my
research I found that the temperature in Australia is comfortable and average as in Nepal. As
Australia is English speaking country there won’t be any language barrier which will let me for
better learning. Regarding educational institutes ,Australian educational institutes are best known
providing world class education where there are option to choose more than 22000 courses and
can also be benefited by scholarships and rewards.8 out of 100 top universities are located in
Australia and also out of 30 livable cities in the world 5 are situated in Australia .Australia
would be perfect for me to acquire both theoretical and practical knowledge .Being a hospitality
student it would be very good opportunity for me to get introduced with new people and learn
about different culture language and religion. Moreover, Graduates from Australia are very
successful in finding jobs and hold prominent positions worldwide. Australian education
institutes are readily accepted for post graduates study at leading international universities.

I researched about the similar courses offered by USA,UK, CANADA the tution fees are very
high in USA The hotel school Cornell SC Johnson college where the tuition fee is 28,275 us
dollar per semester (https://sha.cornell.edu/admissions-programs/graduate/mmh/how-to-apply/
tuition-financing/). Similarly in UK in Oxford Brookers University where the tuition fee is 3100
euro (https://www.brookes.ac.uk/courses/postgraduate/international-hotel-and-tourism-
management) Similarly in Canada Royals roads university where the tuition fees is 15,071 euro
per year. (https://www.mastersportal.com/studies/257473/tourism-management.html After all the
research of different colleges Australia is much more affordable regarding tuition fees and
others facilities.

WHY AUSTRALIA

Australia is a country with diverse culture and religion and it is ranked as the 3rd most popular
destination for international students with its universities ranked as the top universities in the
world. Institutions in Australia offer a wide variety of courses and degrees so international
students can find the courses and universities easily. Australia is also one of the best country
where there is multicultural and religion which helps students to live and study. Australia
practices ESOS act (Education service for overseas students) for international students right to
receive accurate information about courses tuition fess and many more facilities. As well as
Australia also has a legal bodies for those international students (OHSC) Overseas students
health cover it is for helping the international students to cover for the medical treatments while
studying in Australia. The main reason for me to study in Australia is the Australian degree in
hospitality management which has international recognition all over the world which placed me
in right place after my education and secure my future. The reason for me to choose Australia is
the education system and technology which help me to be a good learner. Australia is coming up
with new technologies and innovations in universities The major reason that really impressed me
about Australia is that Australian government educational institutes also work in favor of
international students by providing opportunities and services such as post study work
service .TPS(Tuition protection service ) and availability of part time work facilities in which
TPS ensures about the safety and security of fees paid by overseas students..

WHY SYDNEY

Sydney is one of the world most multicultural city and one of the beautiful city around the world.
Various interesting festival and events are celebrated in Sydney. There are many beautiful places
to visit in Sydney like hunter valley, Blue Mountain and the most beautiful Sydney harbor. There
is also an iconic beach Bondi which is very beautiful. According the report of federal
government Australia is the home for the estimated 50,000 international students in the city.
Enrolment data also reveals an increase in the number of students and also there is rise in
proportion of higher education student’s visas to offshore applicants. The most important factor
for choosing is the living expenses is lower than others countries comparing to Australia which is
$21,041 for annually and is also better for international students to study and live their easily.
The temperature in Sydney is also suitable for me who is from Asian country and easily I can
adjust in that climate.

REASONS FOR CHOOSING INTERNATIONAL COLLEGE OF MANAGEMENT

(ICMS)

After getting all required quality information among various education providers of Australia
from my research finally I came up with the decision to choose international college of
management(ICMS)

Torrens University is the first university in last 20 years and become 40th overall in Australia. It
is also a relatively new institution in Australia we should also considered the fact that it is the
part of the laureate international universities and has network with campus in Adelaide, Sydney,
Melbourne and Brisbane. Torrens University was recognized by an act of south Australian
parliament in 2013 making it is 40th university in Australia. Torrens University is the leading
global network of 70 universities and higher education institutions with over 1 million students
worldwide. It is also ranked in number one hotel management school in Australia and Asia
pacific by TNF 2017. The college also provide industry placement in world class property like
mar riot international, Four seasons, The star, Hyatt regency, Sofitel. The college in Sydney and
Melbourne are specially designed for practical learning. One of the major factors of thus
educational provider is that it offers courses through many fields like business, design, health and
hospitality. They provide international students with the skills and knowledge for their future
goals. After many research about the college I found that it provides excellent student support
facilities for international students like welfare support, career support, academic support ,airport
pickup service and counseling support which helps me to stay in that environment. The
university also provide learning and academic student unit (LASU). Torrens University Australia
offers support to help students like me in learning material. By the help of such programs
conducted I will be able to enhance and develop various skills. The fee structure of this
Universitiy is affordable than others which will be helpful for me as I m the international
students for managing fees and living my life in new country. The college also provides relevant
course structure as I am the student of hotel management I have found exact courses structure
which is mix with my practical internship opportunity during 5th and 6th semester of my study
period so that it will be helpful for me to study in good environment and not much with burden.
After doing research about other universities in Australia about same course I found others
expensive than Torrens university. I compared with university of Queensland for masters of
tourism I found that the fee structure was AUD 42,000 per year. (https://future-
students.uq.edu.au/study/program/Master-of-Tourism-Hotel-and-Event-Management-5548)

Similarly I also got a chance to know about Griffith university which offer masters in
international tourism and hospitality management program with annual fee of AUD
31,500(https://www.griffith.edu.au/study/degrees/master-of-international-tourism-and-
hospitality-management-5709)

BMIHSM globally recognized accredited degree also has an integrated industry placement. The
campus also offers a dynamic and exciting student lifestyle with variety of on campus services.
In the end after care full consideration I found Blue mountain international hotel management
school the most suitable in meeting my different factors such as course structure, tuition fee,
internship and location.

REASON FOR CHOOSING GRADUATE OF BUSINESS (HOSPITALITY AND

MANAGEMENT) AND MASTER IN TOURISM AND HOSPITALITY

After completing my bachelor in hospitality management I decided to continue my education in

this field for my future. The course that I have selected Masters of international hotel
management is of 2 years full duration program which has perfect blend of theoretical and
practical knowledge. This course offer four semesters where each semester has two trimesters.
Each semester has four subjects and the industry placement covers a single semester. The most
important reasons for choosing this program is because of having same academic background of
my previous current experience and future career goal. As I have studied bachelor in hotel
management where almost all subjects are based in relation to hotel and hospitality industry. I
have found most of the subjects under my masters program in Torrens university are related to
most of those I have studied already. It also related to my work experience where I am learning

structures;

growth of business which will help me in my future goals.

CAREER PLAN

As soon I finish my master’s degree from Australia it would open the door and I get many
opportunities in the global work place. I will be returning to my home country which is now
blooming in hospitality industry where I have seen potential career opportunity in hotel
management field. In my home country increasing numbers of hotels and resorts is making
hospitality industry full of opportunities. Nepal is tourism country with tourists arrivals
maintaining an upward trend since mid 2009, the sector is going through an interesting phase
with big investment in hospitality and tourism.

Recently world class brands have entered in Nepali market which will be helpful for my future
goals. Hotels and resorts in Nepal will be hiring people in different departments like kitchen,
housekeeping, service and front office departments and sales of marketing. They want master’s
degree with internally recognized degree. Globally reputed hotels brands like Hilton,Marriort
and Sheraton have entered which will be my future jobs in those brands after my completion on
masters degree in Australia. After completing my masters I think I will be confident I will be
able to start my career in those areas soon after I gain knowledge and experience in related fields
with the international degree of Torrens university blue mountain international hotel
management school. As I have interest in food and beverage manager and hotel manager. I will
be seeking professional career begin with middle level officer. I believe that after I finish my
masters degree I want to work with five star property in Nepal, and I do believe my education
and my experience from international college will be helpful for me in my home country. After
completing my education in Australian renowned university I will be pay high and with high
positions in hotels in Nepal like Hyatt Regency (https://www.hyatt.com/en-US/hotel/nepal/hyatt-

Similarly Nepal also have some national tourism organist ion like Nepal tourism board(NTB)
Nepal association of tours and travels agents(NATTA) which also look for masters graduate in
hospitality field for the positions of Front office manager, Travel and tours office manager ,
General officer This will be my second options for working in secondary level. And I can get
opportunity to work as the lecture in different hospitality educational institutes like NATHM
(https://www.collegenp.com/college/nepal-academy-of-tourism-and-hotel-management-nathm-
kathmandu/) .

Regarding salary I believe after gaining an international degree from blue mountain college and
having internship in world class brand I will be able to get per month salary ranging from NPR
( 70000 to NPR 90000)

I also have my aim to open my own restaurant after gaining several years of education and
experience in my home town where there is now development in hospitality sector is growing up.
so after getting experience through assistant level to senior level in reputed property which I
have mention above I wii be seeking to settle myself as an entrepreneur in my home town.

INCENTIVE TO RETURN BACK TO HOME COUNTRY

After completing my master’s degree program I will have to return my home country for
achieving my future career goal. As I am the only son in my family I have responsibilities to take
care of them in their old age. Since they have invested their life time earning to build my career
up. Our countries Nepal have many rituals and cultures that should be adapted by me for my
family so I should have to be with my parents for those things. For my education my family have
invested around 20 million Nepalese which I should have to look after and my parents property
is also here in Nepal being a only son it’s my responsibilities to look after those and my aim is
to open a restaurant in my home town and look over my family property also. My intention to go
Australia is only for my better education and return back to my own country and do share my
experience and my knowledge towards my country for better hospitality development in my
country.

FINANCE

I am financially sponsored by my family and my elder sister who is in Sydney Australia. They
both are financing me for my education. My parents have sound financial background and they
will be sponsoring for my study time period in Australia. I am so much blessed to have such
family in my life.

My father is a retired engineer in Nepal electricity authority which is a government organization

in Nepal. And my elder sister who is sponsoring me is a registered nurse in Australia they will be
