DETAIL DRAWING
A detail drawing fully describes the Product Engineering requirements or design intent of a single part. It
should represent the part as it is to be manufactured or purchased. In order to permit the maximum latitude
in methods of manufacturing, the drawing should specify the result to be obtained rather than the method of
obtaining it. Functional criteria needed to define part requirements may be included when necessary to meet
design intent. All supplementary information such as testing, processing, reliability and quality control
standards not required to manufacture the part, but required for interpretation, must be displayed on the
drawing.
It should be noted that a drawing (commonly referred to as a "word" drawing) which only display a supplier
and supplier part number does NOT meet the definition of a detail drawing. Refer to CNH Drawing
Standard DWGA125 – Document Source Management on Drawings and Parts Categorization
A detail drawing must be dimensioned and toleranced so as to ensure interchangeability and optimum fit.
See CNH Drawing Standard DWGB100 – Dimensioning and Tolerancing. Part dimensioning must be done
only by means of orthographic views.
A detail drawing must be identified by the CNH part number assigned to the part represented by the
drawing. This is the number that appears in the title block field labeled “Part Number”. For further
information on part numbers, see CNH Engineering Procedure ENPC100 – Part Numbering.
DETAIL DRAWING VIEWS
Normally, two or three principal orthogonal views are used for simple parts, as needed, to clearly document
dimensions, tolerances and design requirements. Parts with many features must display additional, section,
detail or orthogonal views as needed to define the part. Other views such as isometric views and flat pattern
views are used to enhance clarity or provide process data.
Figure 1 shows an example of a detail drawing with a reference isometric view. See CNH Drawing
Standard DWGA103 – Views and Sections, for more information.
SINGLE LINE EPL
When the material designation is a part number where the part described by the drawing has its own
unique part number, the use of an Engineering Parts List (with a single line) may be used as an alternative
to a material note as described on CNH Drawing Standard DWGA100 - Drawing Sheet Sizes and Formats.
When a single line EPL is used, displaying the one item number balloon on the drawing is not mandatory
nor needed for a detail drawing.

SPECIAL SITUATIONS
SYMMETRICALLY OPPOSITE PARTS
It is strongly recommended that symmetrically opposite parts have separate drawings which represent the
individually assigned part numbers.
Note: The “Reference Part” title block field, as defined in CNH Drawing Standard DWGA100, is a
mandatory field. This field has been provided to display the part number(s) of any items that have a design
relationship to the part being shown on the drawing. This design relationship is typically based on similarity
in form and the field should contain the part number of any symmetrically opposite part. To provide a more
visible notation a general note that provides a reference to the symmetrically opposite part may be added
to the drawing. This additional note does not replace the part number being displayed in the “Reference
Field”.
CASTING AND FORGING DRAWINGS
Casting and forging drawings have some unique features based on the special needs of this type of parts.
For details, see CNH Drawing Standard DWGA150 – Casting and Forging Drawings.
DRAWING OF METAL PARTS FORMED BY BENDING
Drawings of metal parts formed by bending have some unique features such as flat pattern views and
recommended dimensioning practices. For details, see CNH Drawing Standard DWGB130 – Drawings for
Metal Parts Formed by Bending.
PAINTED PART DRAWINGS
CNH Drawing Standard DWGA110 – Requirements for Painted Parts specifies the practices to be followed
when paint information is shown on drawings.
SUPPLIER DRAWINGS
Drawings received from suppliers and assigned CNH part numbers, are imported by Product Engineering
on to CNH Supplier Drawing formats as defined by CNH Drawing Standard DWGA101. Also see CNH
Drawing Standard DWGA125 – Document Source Management on Drawings and Parts Categorization.
FORM DRAWINGS
A drawing in which part design information is displayed by means of predefined tables, symbol and views.
Form drawings are created to support groups of parts that have common design characteristics.
See CNH Drawing Standard DWGA200 – Form Drawings, Basic Principles, for more information.
FLAT (UNFORMED) PART DRAWING
Flat parts must display a part thickness value by means of an end or a side view in the detail drawing or as
a note above the title block.
It is strongly recommended that the designer take advantage of CNH Drawing Standard DWGD100 –
Specifying Steel Sheet Thickness and CNH Drawing Standard DWGD105 – Specifying Steel Plate
Thickness when selecting the appropriate material and thickness.
A perimeter burn table and/or the grain direction as defined per in CNH Drawing Standard DWGB130 are
also permitted to be displayed on the flat part drawing.

6.10.3. Electrical Component Drawings
See CNH Drawing Standard DWGA430 – Electrical Component Drawings.
6.10.4. Electrical Connector Drawings
See CNH Drawing Standard DWGA440 – Electrical Connector Drawings.
SERIAL NUMBER PLATE OR LABEL DRAWINGS
Serial Number Plates and Labels have some unique features based on the special needs of this type of
part. For details, see CNH Engineering Procedure ENPD100 Serial Number and Labeling Standards.
“BUDDY” NUMBERS
When a “Buddy” number, as defined per CNH Engineering Procedure ENPC150 – Managing Multiple Part
Number Drawings, is added to a drawing, it will be done by means of a general note, as shown below.
Note: the lower case letters “pppppppp” represent a part number.
PER ENPC150, BUDDY PART NUMBER IS pppppppp
KIT DRAWINGS
When releasing a kit and related instruction sheet, CNH Engineering Procedure ENPF137 – Kits –
Engineering Process must be followed.

ASSEMBLY DRAWINGS
An assembly drawing depicts a group of parts, subassemblies or both. See Figures 2 and 3. It shows the
manner in which these items fit together and contains an Engineering Parts List which identifies them.
Where required, it may include other requirements such as machining at assembly, welding or protective
treatment. It may or may not represent an actual physical assembly. Installation layouts, service parts kits
and other informational drawings are typical of those that may not represent a physical assembly.
ASSEMBLY DRAWING PART NUMBER
An assembly drawing must be identified by the number assigned to the assembly represented by the
drawing. This is the number that appears in the title block field labeled “Part Number”. For further
information on part numbers, see CNH Engineering Procedure ENPC100 – Part Numbering.
ASSEMBLY DRAWING VIEWS
The views created in an assembly drawing are normally one of two types; although, other views such as
detailed views and partial section views are often added for clarity. It should be noted that pictorial views
are permitted and commonly used to create "exploded" assembly drawings. The two types of views for
assembly drawings are:
1) Orthogonal projection views of the assembly, including full or half sections of the views where
necessary. This is the preferred method of creating the views, especially for assemblies involving
power trains and axles. See Figure 2.
2) Working Isometric view may be an exploded or an unexploded pictorial representation. An exploded
view is shown with spaces between neighboring parts and extending from one end of the assembly
to the other. Distinct, neighboring sections of a large assembly can be separated with a larger
spacing between the sections for clarity. Exploded views are best suited for assemblies with 50
components or less. See Figure 3 for an example.
Regardless of which one of the two methods is used for creating drawing views of an assembly, the
drawing should be clear, show all the component parts including detail views of small areas, specify
assembly dimensions where required, and provide functional criteria that are deemed essential to
engineering requirements. See CNH Drawing Standard DWGA103 for more information.
An assembly drawing should only show how the component parts fit together and should not reflect
sequence of operation. It should not include tools or fixtures, except when shown as a reference item to
meet an engineering requirement. Functional criteria needed to define assembly requirements may be
included.
It is permitted to reduce the detail level of sub-assemblies and components when a higher detail level is not
necessary for the perfect drawing comprehension. See Figure 4.

ASSEMBLY DRAWING INFORMATION
Information on assembly drawings should be limited to dimensions or other data pertinent to the assembly,
such as machining at assembly, welding, heat treat, protective finish, etc.
Where a subassembly is shown in a higher level assembly drawing, the subassembly may be shown with
reduced detail. See Figure 4. Adjacent parts not covered by this assembly may be shown in phantom
lines when necessary, to provide additional information on locating or orienting the assembly or its
components in relation to its neighbors.
Subassemblies should not be shown in section in higher level assembly drawings unless it is essential for
the purpose of clarifying an assembly requirement or an intricate assembly detail. See CNH Drawing
Standard DWGA103 for information on recommended practices.
ENGINEERING PARTS LIST
The Engineering Parts List (EPL) must list all parts displayed in the body of the drawing. As specified by
CNH Drawing Standard DWGA100, the EPL is displayed as a single level, summarized listing of all the
parts and subassemblies that make up the assembly. This means that subassemblies are not broken
down into their component parts. The total quantities are shown in the EPL for parts with more than one
occurrence. For items that do not occur in discrete quantities in the EPL, the metric unit in which they are
measured is placed in the U/M (Unit of Measure) column, see CNH Engineering Procedure ENPF132–
Specifying Bulk Materials on Drawings and in Engineering BOMs. Appropriate symbols must be used. For
approved symbols, See CNH Engineering Procedure ENPG100–SI (Metric) Units.
The numbers in the item column, as an index, must be displayed in an increasing sequence from bottom to
top. It is not mandatory to fill the item column consecutively, allowing to make gaps between a number and
another, for example: 10, 20, 25, 40. See Figure 5.
NOTE: EPL on the drawing must match the BOM in EC.

When a single component needs to be installed or assembled to some environment, the Engineering Parts
List will have a single component. The drawing will display how that component will fit relating to the
background and displaying the one item number balloon on the drawing is not mandatory. See Figure 6.

PART ITEM NUMBER AND QUANTITY
The information on part item number in the EPL is shown on the body of the drawing for all the parts and
subassemblies listed. This is done by enclosing the item number in a balloon, about 3 to 4 times the font
size in diameter, and extending a leader from the balloon to the part or subassembly, as shown in Figures
2 and 3. Merged balloons are permitted as displayed in Figure 3 zones 10K, 14H, and 15D.

Bulk materials, as defined on CNH ENPF132, are exempt from displaying item number balloons; if the
balloon is not shown, the application or use of these materials and quantity should be clarified by a
(general, local or flag) drawing note or an engineering specification with proper instructions. This exception
also applies to parts and sub-assemblies which are part of the EPL but are not shown on the body of the
drawing.
The part quantities must also be indicated and will be accomplished by splitting the balloon in half
horizontally, with the upper half showing the item number and the lower half showing the quantity.
Figure 3 illustrates the use of balloons for indicating part item number and quantity.
The quantities shown with the balloons must agree with the quantities shown in the EPL.
If an item has a quantity of one and is shown with balloons in two or more places on the drawing, all the
balloons except the first, show the quantity as REF, as shown below.
If an item has a quantity of more than one and is shown in two or more views on the drawing, the quantity
may be split between the balloons. However, the total of all the quantities must equal the quantity shown in
the EPL.
For items such as shims, grease, thread sealer, etc., the quantity used in the assembly may not be fixed,
but could vary from one assembly to another. In such cases, the following procedure will be used:
• The nominal (average) quantity of the item used by the assembly is shown in the EPL
• The balloon for the item shows this nominal quantity in the lower half as with other balloons
• The text UAR (for Use As Required) is placed beside the balloon to indicate that the quantity for the
item may vary from one assembly to another. See illustration below.
To provide a correct relationship between the EPL and the EC EBOM, it is NOT acceptable to use the text
UAR in the ‘Quantity’ box of the EPL or in the lower half of the balloon.
Parts and sub-assemblies which are not part of the EPL are shown in drawing views in phantom lines in
order to explain an assembly requirement. They can be identified by a local note or a flag note, as
specified by CNH Drawing Standard DWGA115 – Notes on Drawings.
PART AND DRAWING CHANGES
A component part of an assembly may be modified due to a change in form, fit or function, but it may still
retain the same part number since the modified part will also work in older assemblies. In such cases, the
procedures specified in CNH Drawing Standard DWGA120 must be followed in order to record the details.
