“Experiment 2: Angular Measurements”
Student Name: Ahmad Nader Ghawanmeh.
Student ID: 320180101053.
Instructor Name: Dr. Rashid Abdul Latif Lotfi Abdullah.
2. Objectives:
- To familiarize the student with the types, applications of angular measurement
devices
- To learn how to use the bevel protractor, the vernier protractor, and the sine
bar for measuring angles.
3. Apparatus:
a. Plain bevel protractor.
b. Vernier bevel protractor.
c. Sin bar.
d. Set of block gauges.
The angle is defined as the opening between two lines which meet at a point. If
one line is moved around a point in an arc, a complete circle can be formed and it
is from this circle that units of angular measurement are derived.
If a circle is divided into 360 parts, each part is called a degree, and it is referred to
by the symbol; º. Each degree is further divided into sixty parts called minutes,
referred to by the symbol;’, and each minute is further sub-divided into 60 parts
called seconds, referred to by the symbol; '‘.
Protractors
There are various types of protractors available, including the bevel protractor
figure 2-1, the plain bevel protractor figure 2-2, and vernier protractor figure 2-3.
The bevel is an angle gauge which has no scale. It must be set to the required
angle before use in indirect measuring and marking methods.
Typically, a plain protractor is capable of measuring to 0.5º, while the vernier
bevel protractor is capable of measuring to an accuracy of 5’.
For angular measurements, the vernier bevel protractor is commonly used. It
consists of a base plate attached to the main body, and an adjustable blade which
is attached to a circular plate containing the vernier scale. The adjustable blade is
capable of rotating freely about the center of the main scale, engraved on the
body of the instrument and can be locked in any position.

Sin bar
A sine bar is a carefully machined steel bar which is used with two cylinders of
equal diameter that may or may not be fastened to it. The axes of these two
cylinders are mutually parallel to each other and also parallel to and at equal
distance from the upper (flat) surface of the sine bar. The distance between the
axis of the two cylinders is 100,200,250, or 300mm and it is precisely known.
The bar comes with holes and slots through it so that the work piece can be
clamped to it. There are several forms of sine bars (plates), they all follow the same
principle to measure angles.
Figure 2-5
The setting of the sine bar is shown in figure 2.5, and it is used in conjunction with a surface
plate and gauge blocks. The angle of setting is given as;
θ= sin-1(h/l)
