This article is taken from theguardianonline , the digital version of an independent newspaper
in the United Kingdom . This unbalanced article talks about how the American sprinter ,
Justin Gatlin had won gold in the world championship 100m final , and the Jamaican sprinter
we all knew as the fastest man in the world : Usain Bolt had taken home a bronze . This piece
was written in 2017, mostly after Usain Bolt had retired from his sprinting career. The article
heavily focuses on Justin and Usain’s rivalry, the reaction of the London Stadium after Usain
had come third, Justin’s doping bans, and unnecessary information from other competitions
were both of them were competitors. The report relies heavily on mostly throwing shade on
both sprinters and writing about other world championships were both of them were
competitors. The use of dramatic and persuasive language conveys how this report is typical
journalism .
The evidence of melodrama and sensationalism is seen all the way in the heading and
subheading . The heading has no relation whatsoever to the actual content in the report .
“Justin Gatlin gate crashes Usain Bolt’s London 2017 farewell party in 100m” The heading of
the report conveys how Justin Gatlin attended Usain Bolt’s farewell party without being
invited, and the actual report speaks about their competition in the world championship which
was held in London . The heading is meant to attract its specific audience , but will probably
be disappointed after reading the whole article and finding out its not related to the heading.
Not much is spoken about the second place winner : Christian Coleman . The two
subheadings of this article , tell us that Justin had won a gold with the timing of 9.92 sec ,
Christian had won a silver , and Usain had to “settle” for a bronze medal . The word “settle”
indicates that the author had high expectations of Bolt and probably expected him to win the
Gold .
This article makes it seem that Justin Gatlin is the antagonist and that Usain Bolt is a victim of
his so called horrendous crimes . This can be seen in this sentence “athletics greatest
pantomime villain”. Pantomime is the act of showing or explaining something through
movements of the body and face instead of talking . In the article , there is a video attached
which shows all the competitors sprinting and in one of the clips it shows Justin bowing on
his knees to Usain . So by using the word pantomime , the author is mostly trying to convey
this incident .
Since this article was published online , it is being presented to the whole world and anyone
accessing the internet can read it , so I think the main audience of this article are sports
fanatics or someone just browsing through the internet . The article also mentions a lot of
worldwide destinations like London , Beijing , and Daegu . The video that is in the article
basically summarises most of the sports events that had taken place in the championship . The
thumbnail of the video shows Justin Gatlin’s reaction to him winning the race . The other
competitors can be seen as well . Furthermore, photographers , the completely packed
stadium , the track , and advertisement boards for various companies or sponsors can be
sighted . The report uses various types of statistics to convey details . Such as timings , dates ,
distances , ages etc. The statistics or not that dramatic but are overall needed to prove certain
statements .
