“Indeed, Allah does not forgive association with Him, but He forgives what is less than that for

whom He wills. And he who associates others with Allah has certainly fabricated a tremendous
sin.” - (The Holy Qur’an 4:48)

The first duty of every individual in this world is to believe in the oneness of God. In order to
believe in His oneness, we need to believe in His attributes. One of those attributes is Oneness
and Complete Uniqueness (ie. He has no similarities of any kind to anything else). Shirk means
relating to a partner or assuming a large number of creators. In Islam, shirk means to equate
somebody or something with Allah or to consider them as Allah’s equal. Shirk is the opposite of
Tawhid (Oneness of Allah). It is the major sin in Islam because associating or relating someone
or something to Allah and considering them as Allah’s alike would be the gravest lie. One who
does Shirk is called a Mushrik or polytheist.

One of the main reasons why Allah sent the prophets and His messenger is to convene people
to worship Him alone and inform them against Shirk, or associating partners with Allah. Shirk
has a big effect on every individual who commits it. Foremost, it is untruth and it fosters other
false activities in life (false deities, items, rituals, etc.). It invalidates every good work if you are
committing this sin because you’re sitting on the biggest lie of all. With this, we must repent from
all kinds of shirk, whether it is minor or major shirk. If a person sincerely repents, Allah will
accept his repentance and forgive him fo r his sins because He is the most gracious and the
most merciful. So, before it’s too late we need to put our actions straight and correct our
intentions to avoid committing shirk.
