Use 18mm plywood as formface
Use 50x100 SC4 timber (300mm C/C Max.) as secondary bearer
Use 2 nos. 50x100 SC4 timber as primary bearer
Use 50x100 Sc4 timber as timber prop

DATE 30-Jul-20 Timber Prop Design Rev 1st 8
Timber prop
Use 50x100 SC4 timber 6.74kN Max. reaction
from previous design check of primary bearer
Timber prop should be under
150mm thk slab and the soffit formwork.
i.e. the length of timber prop should be
less then 1000mm headroom.
For extra safe consideration,
design check with total lenth 1000mm
as the headroom, ignore Single Prop
the deduction from slab and soffit formwork (100x50 SC4 timber)
The axial load on prop = 6.74kN
The applied loading = 6.74Kn / 50 x 100mm2 = 1.35 N/mm2
Properties of Prop
The longest length of prop (L) = 1000 mm (on safe side)
Width of Props = 50 mm Depth of Props = 100 mm
Area of Props = 5000 mm2
Moment of Inertia (Iyy) = 1041666.7 mm^4
Radius of gyration ry = 14.43 mm
Find the effective length (Le) for buckling about the weak axis, y-y axis,
Number of braces on the prop = 0
L/1 = 1000.00 mm
Calculate slenderness ratio (λ)
λ = effective length / radius of gyration (ry)
= Le/ ry = 69.28
Check all modification factors: K3, K7 and K12 (Refer to 5268 Part 1988 table 17)
K3 = 1.75 K8 = 1.1
Calculate the ratio of modulus of elasticity to compression stress (K12)
Refer to BS5268 Part 2 1988 Table 9, Strength class: SC4
Modulus of elasticity (E) = 9900 N/mm2
Compression parallel to grain (σ) = 7.9 N/mm2
E /σ = 1253.1646
Using E /σ*K3 and λ, we can obtain K12 from BS 5268 Part 2 1988 table 22,
K 12 = 0.634 In safe side, adapted the min. value within the range
Calculate the permissble compression stress = Grade compression stress (σ) x K factors
= 9.64 N/mm2 > 1.35 N/mm2
The applied loading OK
