1. Given a velocity field V = (4 + xy + 2t) i +6x 3 j + (3xt2+ z) k.
Find the acceleration of a fluid particle at (2, 4, – 4) and time t = 3.
[Ans. Acceleration, a = 170i + 1296j + 572k or (170, 1296, 572) units, magnitude: 1375.39 units]
2. The velocity field in a fluid medium is given by V = 3xy2 i + 2xy j + (2zy + 3t) k.
Find the magnitudes and directions of (i) translational velocity, (ii) rotational velocity and
(iii) the vorticity of a fluid element at (1, 2, 1) and at time t = 3.
[Ans. (i) (12, 4, 13) units, (ii) (1, 0, -4) units, (iii) 2i – 8k]
3. Find the acceleration and vorticity components at a point (1, 1, 1) for the following flow field:
u = 2x2 + 3y, v = – 2xy + 3y2 + 3zy, w = – (3/2)z 2 + 2xz - 9y2z.
[Ans. Acceleration: (32, -7.5, 23) units, Vorticity: (-21, -2, -5) units]
4. A two-dimensional flow field is defined as V = i x – j y. Derive the equation of streamline
passing through the point (1, 1).

5. Given an unsteady temperature field T = (xy + z + 3t)K and unsteady velocity field V = xy i + z j + 5t k ,
what will be the rate of change of temperature of a particle at a point (2, – 2, 1) at time t = 2s?

6. The velocity field in a steady flow is given in a rectangular Cartesian coordinate system
as V = 6 xi + (4y + 10)j + 2t k.
What is the pathline of a particle which is at (2, 6, 4) at time t = 2s?

7. The velocity components in a two-dimensional flow field for an incompressible fluid are given by
u = ex cos h(y) and v = – ex sin h(x). Determine the equation of streamline for this flow.
[Ans. cos hx + sin hy = constant]
8. A three-dimensional velocity field is given by u = – x, v = 2y and w = 5 – z.
Find the equation of streamline through (2, 2, 1).
[Ans. x2 y = 8, y(5 – z)2 = 32]
9. Find third component of velocity if two velocity components are given by
u = x3 + y3 + 2z2 and v = -x2y – yz - xy.
[Ans. w = xy + 0.5z2 + - 2x2z + f(x,y)]
10. Velocity field is given by u = (1/3)y3 + 2x –x2y and v = xy2 -2y – (1/3)x3.
Show it is a case of irrotational flow (a), obtain expressions for  (b) and  (c).
[Ans. (b)  = 0.5x2y2 – 2xy – (1/12)x4– (1/12)y4, (c)  = -(1/3)xy3 – x2 + (1/3)x3y + y2]
11. Given  = (3/2)y2 –x2 and  = 3xy. Determine velocity components at points (1, 3) and (3, 3) and
discharge between the streamlines passing through these points.

The stream function  in cm3/s is expressed by  = 4xy, where x
and y are in m. When the flow boundary is defined as per the
accompanying figure, calculate at B (a) velocity, (b) convective
acceleration, and (c) discharge across AB per unit length.
