the objectives.)

A. Activity

be divided into seven (7) groups. You
are reminded about our health
protocols about social distancing and
keep your face masks on during your
discussion. I have here strips of
paper with a word on it and you will
use those words to make a simple
sentence. With your four (4) members
for each group, for this activity, Yes, Miss.
divide the task by pair. Later on, I
will let you pick one of these papers
and you need to make a simple (Students will discuss their output.)
sentence using the present tense and
past tense those words that is written
on it. (see appendix A)

Is the instruction clear to you?

Very well! At this moment, I want you

to pick your strip of paper here in
front. One person per pair only. I
will give you two (2) minutes to
discuss your answer. Please pick a
representative also that will present (Students will present their outputs.)
your answers later.

(The teacher will distribute the strips

of paper to the students.)

Times up! Now, let’s proceed to our

first presenter. (The presentation will
be followed by the sequence of their
group numbers.) (Students may give varied answers.)

Good job everyone!

B. Analysis
After the activity, the student will be
asked with the following question:

 What have you observed from the

sentences that you have made?

Well said! We use the present tense

of the verb when the action was made
at that point of time and past tense is
used when the action has been made
already.

For today’s lesson, we will discuss

the Active and Passive Voice.

C. Abstraction
Active Voice
- when the subject does or (Students will read the sentences on the
“acts upon” the verb, the screen.)
sentence is said to be in the
active voice.

EXAMPLES: Hidilyn Diaz is the subject/doer of the

- The old father gives the sentence.
money to the boy.
In this sentence, we have here our We use the word revealed for this sentence.
subject, the old father which is the doer of
the action and we have gives as our verb.
Let’s have another example.
- Hidilyn Diaz revealed her
secret towards winning the President Duterte is the subject/doer and
Olympic gold. delivered is the verb used in the sentence.
Can you tell me the subject or the doer of
the action?
How about the verb that is used in the
sentence?

Good job! How about this next sentence?

Can you tell me the subject/doer of the (Students will read the sentences on the
action and the verb used in the sentence? screen.)
- President Duterte delivered
his State of the Nation
Address for his last term of
his service.

Very good! Now, when are we going to use

the active voice? Kindly read what’s on the
screen.

(The teacher will flash on the screen

the following:
Active voice is used for most non-
scientific writing.
Using active voice for most of your
sentences makes your meaning clear
for readers.
Sentences in active voice are also
more concise than those in passive
voice.) Yes, Miss.

Now let’s move on to passive voice.

Passive Voice
- when the subject receives
the action of the verb, the
sentence is said to be in the
passive voice.
EXAMPLES:
- The money is given by the
old father to the boy.
Is there a difference with this sentence and
our first example a while ago?

Now, our subject here is no longer the doer

of the action, but it is already the receiver
of the action. It’s not the money that gives,
but it is the money that is given. So the
subject become now the receiver of the
action which is given.

Let us look at the structure of a sentence

which is in the Passive Voice:

Subject + Auxiliary Verb (be) + Main

Verb (Past Participle) + by + Agent

First, we have the subject which is the

receiver of the action. Then we have the
auxiliary verb (Be verbs). Next, we have the
main verb which is in its past participle
form. Then we have the word “by” plus the
agent. We must take note that “by” and
agent are sometimes optional in the passive Yes, Miss.
voice.

Now, let us try to dissect the sentence a

while back.

The money is our subject, is is our auxiliary

verb, and given is our main verb which is in
its past participle then the money is given.
So even if we are to remove the “by” and
the agent, our sentence can stand by itself
because it already states a complete
thought. But we can also add the word “by”
plus the agent which is the old father. So,
our sentence would be the money is given
by the old father.
(Students will read the examples.)
Did you get the point of the passive voice?

Very good! Now, when are we going to use

the passive voice? Kindly read what’s on
the screen.

(The teacher will flash on the screen

the following:
You want to emphasize the receiver
of the action.
EXAMPLE:
- The gavel was pounded by
the judge.
As you can see here the gavel is our subject
then we have an auxiliary verb was and the
past participle of our main verb which is
pounded plus the word by and the agent or
doer of the action.

We don’t know who did the action

(the agent).
EXAMPLE:
- My wallet has been stolen.
By looking at this example, we do not know
who did the action so we can use the
passive voice.

The actor is not important or

interesting.
EXAMPLE:
- Our house is being painted
by JMP Company.
In here, if you think that the actor (JMP
Company) is not important in the sentence, (The students will perform the activity.)
then you can just remove it. So, your
sentence would be Our house is being
painted.

You are talking about a general

truth.
EXAMPLE:
- Mistakes were made.

We are writing formal or scientific

texts.
EXAMPLE:
- Potassium was added and
mixed in.

D. Application (Group representatives will present their

For our third activity, you will outputs.)
compare some set of sentences that
will be flash here on the screen later.
Choose whether the sentence is in the
active or its passive voice and write it
on the illustration boards that I will
be providing to you. Go to your
respective group that we had earlier.
1. Carlos Bulosan revealed the reality (After the activity, the students will sit
about social discrimination. down.)
2. The president visited the victims of
the typhoon.
3. A feeding program was initiated by
the SSG officers.
4. We were asked to stay at home by (Students will prepare for their quiz.)
the front liners.
5. The teacher prepared the self -
learning modules.

sister.
7. I cleaned the house.
8. Some of my books were put into a
garage sale.
9. All the paintings were sold online by
mom.
10. The house was repaired by dad.

Now, let us check your outputs. Another

group representative, please be on front to
present your answers.

Please take your seats.

Congratulations to each and everyone here.

I think all of you are now ready for our
quiz.

Now for our evaluation, I want you to get a

one (1) whole sheet of paper and answer the
following:

IV. EVALUATION
(The teacher will be giving each student a
copy of a short story.)
Directions:
Answer the T-chart below. Write down as
many active voice and passive voice that
you have seen inside the given story.

Bank Robbery at First National Bank

Police were called to the First National
Bank yesterday. The bank was robbed at
12:15pm. One million was stolen. No
customers were hurt, but one robber was
shot by police.

Seventeen customers were in the bank at the

time of the robbery. They followed the
instructions of the robbers and dropped to (The students will pass their papers after the

robbery. One robber was shot by a police
officer when he tried to leave the bank. The
robber was hit by one bullet, but he escaped
with the other robbers. They drove away in
a white truck. Some of the customers were
interviewed on TV about the robbery. They (Students given answers may vary.)
were happy to be alive after this terrible
experience.

“When the robber was shot, I screamed.”

robbers. The fingerprints were found on the
desk, on the doors, and on the guns. Two
guns were left at the bank as the robbers
escaped in a car. One robber was shot, and
the blood he left on the floor is another
important clue. The fingerprints and the
blood are being studied by police
investigators.

The robbers were filmed by the bank’s

cameras, but they have not been identified
yet. The video is being analyzed by the
police. Call the police if you have any
information.

(After the activity, the teacher will ask some

questions for the topic’s recap.)

Based on the story we have a while ago,

what have you learned about it or how can
you relate it in real life situation?

Since we are done with our discussion, let’s

try to check your vocabularies.

What is the difference between Active and

Passive Voice?

V. GENERALIZATION
