Course Outline:
The course syllabus consists of the following four modules:
Power plant engineering
Why power plant, load-duration curve, operating factor, layout and components of thermal power
plant, ideal Carnot and Rankine cycle, irreversibilities, mean temperature of heat addition,
superheating, reheating, cycle analysis, ideal regeneration, optimum regeneration, open and closed
heaters, supercritical cycle, plant efficiency, cogeneration, cascade cycles, combined cycle.
Air-conditioning and refrigeration
Why refrigeration, reverse Carnot cycle, reverse Rankine cycle, vapour compression system, COP
analysis, multi pressure system, flash gas removal, flash intercooling, optimum interstage pressure,
multi evaporator systems with single and multiple compressors, cascade system, vapour absorption
system, why air-conditioning, properties of moist air, psychrometer, psychrometric chart, mixing
process, basic psychrometric processes, sensible heating and cooling, latent heating and cooling,
sensible heat factor for a general process control line.
Fuels and combustion
Basics, ideal gas law, gas mixtures, first-law for a system and CV, reactants and products, A/F ratio
Standardized enthalpy, enthalpy of formation, enthalpy of reaction, heating value, First law analysis
of combustion system – SSSF and closed systems, Adiabatic flame temperature, chemical equilibrium,
equilibrium constant, Chemical kinetics, elementary reactions, Law of mass-action, Reaction rates for
multi-step mechanisms, quasi-steady-state approximation, partial equilibrium approximation
IC engines
Classification of heat engines, IC engine components and nomenclature, engine performance
parameters, Air standard cycles: Otto, Diesel, combined cycle. Fuel-air cycles, effects of parameters
on engine performance, Actual power cycles: different losses, volumetric efficiency, valve-timing
diagrams. Engine performance characteristics

Prerequisites: ESO201A
Lecture Plan:
There are 28 lecture slots available for this semester for ME301A. Being a 2 credit course, the
number of lectures should be 26. Two extra lectures will be utilized for conducting quizzes. That
way, we do not have to find slots on Saturdays.
Grading Policy:
Mid Semester Examination: 30%
End Semester Examination: 40%
Two Quizes: 20%
Attendance and class performance: 10%
Grading will be relative. However, for a passing grade, a minimum of absolute performance
would be necessary.

Note: Syllabus for any exam/quiz will be comprehensive (i.e. everything taught up to
the point of exam)
Make-up Examinations:
No make up for midsem.
Up to one quiz can be prorated ONLY against SUGC approved leave.
Endsem make up will be conducted as per the DOAA guideline for the same.
Note:
o Misconduct of any kind (such as adopting unfair means during examinations or using proxy
in classes) will be reported to institute disciplinary authorities, in addition to penalty in the
course-grade. The discretion will lie solely with the instructor.
