Fieldwork: Determining Pace Factor

John Angelo C. Competente completed fieldwork 1 to determine his pace factor. He measured and placed pins at 0, 20, 40, and 60 meters and paced between the marks 3 times, recording the number of paces. His average pace was calculated as 0.61 meters. In a separate location, he paced between points A and B and then B and A 5 times, calculating the average paces. Using his pace factor of 0.61 meters/pace and the average paces of 73.7, he determined the pace distance to be approximately 45 meters. He provided documentation including photos and a Google map.

Name: COMPETENTE, JOHN ANGELO C.

Course & Section: BSCE- 2A

FIELDWORK 1. DETERMINATION OF PACE FACTOR

Objectives:

1. To determine your own pace factor

2. To become familiar with using a steel tape to measure approximate horizontal
distances.
3. To become familiar with keeping notes in a field book.

4. To compute pace distance using your own pace factor

Equipments:

Steel tape, chaining pins (Improvised Straw, bottle and tape)

Instructions:

1. Since it is pandemic the location for this fieldwork shall be determined by the
students individually
2. Measure and place chaining pins in the ground at 0m, 20m, 40m, and 60m
stations.
3. Use ranging rods to insure that all 4 pins are in a straight line.
4. Use your normal walk to pace off each distance (i.e.: 0 to 20, 0 to 40 and 0 to 60)
a total of 3 times each.
5. Record the number of paces for each trial in your field book.
6. Calculate the average number of paces for each distance.
7. Calculate the average length of your pace.
8. Write up the lab in your field book, refer to the following example.
Number of Paces

1 38 69 98
2 34 65 97
3 36 66 95

Computed Pace Factor = 0.61 meters/pace

9. Identify an area in which you can measure a distance using the computed pace
factor.

10. Mark A on a point in which the measurement will begin and B in which the
measurement will end.

11. Walk normally on a straight to pace off the distance from A to B then record the
number of paces that was counted.

12. Repeat by walking normally from B to A and record the paces that was counted.

13. Perform the activity five times.

14. Compute the pace distance by multiplying the average number of paces to the
computed pace factor.

15. Using the google map show the location in which the fieldwork was performed.

16. Provide also the evidences by attaching pictures.

17. Please keep safe in performing fieldwork 1.
