Three school clubs

Art club
The Art club, with Mr Chance, happens in Room 6D at 3:30 on the first and
third Tuesday of each month. Learn about great artists of the past and
make your own pictures with oil paints, watercolours and charcoal. The
club doesn’t cost anything to join, and materials (worth £10) are given to
you. Your painting will start to improve, and you’ll be able to paint a lovely
picture of beautiful mountains as a present for a parent or a friend.

Boat club
Don’t worry if you’ve never been in a boat before: in the Boat club, you’ll
learn everything about sailing boats and canoes. And you don’t need to buy
any equipment. The first meeting is on the second Wednesday in September,
and you can even bring your mum and dad along to learn with you! We’ll
show you some lovely rivers and lakes where you can sail or paddle. For
more information (including costs) please visit www.schoolboatclub.edu.

Singing club
Ms Neilson’s Singing club is for all pupils who can sing. It usually gets full
very quickly, so let Ms Neilson know as soon as possible if you’d like to join.
You can expect your singing to really improve in one to two months. You’ll
meet lots of great new people. And at the end of the year, we join with the
singing club of another school and give a concert. And it’s just £4 for the
whole year (we haven’t increased the price in 10 years!) Thursdays at 3:30 in
Room 3C.

Part 3

Questions 14 – 18

For each question, choose the correct answer.

Alana Morris is just 16, but she often travels around the US. She takes part in marathons, which are
42-kilometre running races. In her first race, Alana finished fourth. She says she went too quickly for the
first five kilometres, although she had tried not to do this when she practised. It was also a hot day so
she needed to drink more water than usual.

After her first race, her father (who is also her running coach) said, ‘The main thing was that her first
marathon was a fun experience for her. I’ve always been a runner, and we’ll continue to run together.’
His daughter clearly shares his love of sport and fitness.

Almost all of the other runners in these races are adults, and so are much older than Alana. Does she
worry about being the youngest? ‘When I go to a race, it’s great that the older runners give me advice
about my running technique. It’s very useful. And at the end, I always like to get a selfie with the winner!’
she said.

Alana is taking part in the Ohio Marathon next weekend. She wants to finish it in less than 2 hours
40 minutes. The fastest she’s done yet is 2 hours 42, which is still 8 minutes slower than the 2 hours 34
that the famous marathon runner Cathy Schiro managed when she was 16.

Many marathons have a lower age limit of 18. But as Alana shows, younger teenagers can be great long-
distance runners too.
