Green computing

Green computing aims to attain economic viability and improve the way
computing devices are used. Green IT practices include the development of
environmentally sustainable production practices, energy-efficient computers and
improved disposal and recycling procedures.

Approaches of Green computing

To promote green computing concepts at all possible levels, the following four
approaches are employed:
Green use: Minimizing the electricity consumption of computers and their
peripheral devices and using them in an eco-friendly manner
Green disposal: Repurposing existing equipment or appropriately disposing of, or
recycling, unwanted electronic equipment
Green design: Designing energy-efficient computers, servers, printers, projectors
and other digital device
Green manufacturing: Minimizing waste during the manufacturing of computers
and other subsystems to reduce the environmental impact

Practical Thoughts of Green computing in computer education. Green computing
focuses four “R” Reduce , Reuse, Recycle, Respect and Responsibility.

How educational institutions can use Green computing

• Centralization of all the desktop computers in the school labs.
• Publicizing the Green computing to the students and staffs.
• By using server virtualization technologies to combine a number of servers
onto one or more hardware systems to save more energy.
• By purchasing only energy star compliant products
• By citing students access to virtual schooling at home to reduce the amount of
electricity consumption, this is also very important to those students who live in
rural area so as to cut transportation cost of Technology, We can make our
computing experience more environmentally friendly and sustainable for the
future.

Is a green computing strategy purely technical , or is it a

technical and managerial considerations ?
Yes, green computing Strategy is a combination of technical and managerial
considerations.
Adoption of what type of green computing technology/strategy will be considered
as a Matter of technicality and implementing that selected strategy in the
organization will Make it a managerial decision matter.
Adoption of green IT will be a technical matter but when the college adopts the
Strategy then explaining and making the student understand those strategies will
be a Managerial decision matter.
