King Abdulaziz Cultural Center Design

The Abdulaziz King for World Culture project is a 45,000 sqm cultural center under construction in Dhahran, Saudi Arabia by Snoehetta architects. Construction started in autumn 2009 and is scheduled to be completed by the end of 2011. The complex features a series of curved, pebble-like structures housing functions like a library, exhibition hall, and performance spaces. The complex draws inspiration from the surrounding desert landscape and uses stainless steel tubes to create its futuristic, curved geometric forms.

concept
In the city of Dhahran, a vast array of curious forms shaped like pebbles rises out of the
desert..it represent gelogy while saudia arabia is rich in oil

Along life periods past present and future

Plans

The King Abdulaziz Center is an articulation of pebble-like shapes, with smooth rounded
angles. While structurally linked to each other, each pebble contains a separate
function: library, temporary exhibition, concert and performing arts hall and the lifelong
learning tower.

The geometry of this complex is based on three parameters: the geometrical shape of
the pebble; the shape of the entrance opening into the pebble; and the starting point of
the line that wraps along the shape of this opening.
Sections

Material of interest: Stainless steel tubes

Properties of material:

• easy to bend and form shapes

• adjust temperature, isolate from the heat

• durable

• futuristic, elegant, immaculate uniform

Structural context
Natural elements — here desert — play an important role in the design of the complex
shape. The elliptical monoscape which is surrounding the complex is based on the
desert.
.

These pebbles, as I mentioned, are leaned on each other based on singular supporting
the plural, so that they shift vertical forces into horizontal ones with the aim of carrying
them into the foundation.
This results in an individual yet collective maintenance of each pebble.
