Problem set 2

1. A cat hears the voice of a mouse. He finds himself with two rapid displacements of
magnitudes 3.0 m and 5.0 m. Determine the possible resultant displacements
analytically.

2. A downward force of 200 N acts simultaneously with a 500 N directed to the left.
Find the resultant force analytically.

3. A woman jogs 4.2 km East and then 2.9 km South. Determine the location of the
woman from her starting point.

4. Two ropes A and B are attached to a mooring hook so that an angle of 60 0 exists
between the two ropes. The tension in rope A is 80 N and the tension I n rope B is
120 N. Find the resultant force analytically.

5. A rope making an angle of 30 0 with the horizontal drags a crate along the floor.
What must be the tension in the rope, if a horizontal force of 40 N is required to drag
the crate?

6. Two forces act on the car. Force A is 120 N West and force B is 200 N 60 0 N of
West. What is the magnitude and direction of the resultant force on the car?

7. A traffic light is attached to the midpoint of a rope so that each segment makes an
angle of 100 with the horizontal. The tension in each rope segment is 200 N. If the
resultant force at the midpoint is zero, what must be the weight of the traffic light?

8. Find the x and y components of the ff vectors.

b. velocity of 40 km/hr at 120 0
c. A force of 50 N at 330 0
10. A force vector points 550 above the positive x axis. It has a y component
of 300 Find
A. The magnitude of the force vector
B. The X component of the force vector

11. A rocket fires two of its engines. One engine produces a thrust of 800 N in the
forward direction and the other 500 N, 500 relative to the first engine. Find the
magnitude and the direction of the resultant displacement relative to the first
engine. Use cosine law

then 2.0 m Southeast, and the third cutting in an unknown direction. His destination
is 6.0 m directly East. Determine the magnitude and direction of his third cutting.
